Inspired by Freegums

I follow i am OTHER, something that Pharrell put together, on Facebook. There was this video. Framed in a long landscape format, not the traditional 16:9 ratio, that filled about 1/3 of my screen just in the middle. The top and bottom were just black. They featured this artist, Freegums, in a video at first just walking with his dog on this trail. Then, they showed his work, patterns, collages, so detailed and intricately fitting next to each other. He said something that made me think of Mt. Near. He looks at architecture, form, geology, shapes, that add up to create a hill, a mountain, a structure. I think I want that melding of these seemingly different worlds—the wilderness and the city. Maybe what incredible thing we can find in the city, it’s there in the wilderness. And what’s incredible in the wilderness, we can find in the city. I want these two intricacies to meet.

Freegums x Pharrell Williams for Quarterly Co.

Earlier this year, we had the pleasure of producing a set of notebooks illustrated byFreegums, to be included in one of Pharrell Williams’ Quarterly Co. packages. Quarterly Co. is a subscription service that allows you to purchase curated packages from influential curators: musicians, chefs, entrepreneurs, stylists, even Bill Nye the Science Guy.

Musician and producer Pharrell Williams says “the theme of my Quarterly mailings is curiosity. I think it’s important to live each day like a student.” His “Forever A Student” package in October featured a backpack, two Scout Books and pencils, all featuring illustrations by Freegums.

Alvaro Freegums Ilizarbe is a Peruvian illustrator based in Los Angeles, whose intricate line work has been featured on shoes, apparel and album covers, and has been commissioned by Nike, Becks and Weiden + Kennedy.
