FTB scavenger hunt: second task

Congratulations to everyone who has completed the task so far: @incherre​, @brakebillscollege​, @freetraderbeowolf​, @physicalkid​, and @ohmontagues​. If you’re still working on it, don’t fret -- acceptance to Free Trader Beowulf is rolling, so there’s no time limit on any of the tasks.

As a little Christmas present to my followers, I’m releasing the second task today. This task will present a challenge that is more intellectual than creative and as such, it is absolutely critical that you send your answers to me individually.

For this task, you are asked to complete a metalogical puzzle. You may have seen a version of it before, but this will only be an advantage for you if you actually understood the solution. Without further ado, here’s the puzzle:

There are forty five inmates in a prison barge floating in outer space. All were accused of violent crimes and all have amnesia. Shortly into their internment, a guard learns that the inmates are all from a species where criminality is encoded on their faces in the form of a small circular birthmark on their foreheads. Innocent inmates have an open circle and guilty inmates have a closed circle. He determines that 15 of the inmates are innocent and informs the warden.

But the warden doesn’t want to lose his prisoners, so he devises a plan. He tells the prisoners that at least one of them is innocent, and that a ship will come once a day and release anyone who can correctly state their own innocence. The inmates are not allowed to guess and they are not allowed to communicate with one another in any way. All they can do is observe the other inmates around them.

The question is this: on which day after the warden’s announcement will the first inmate(s) be released, and how many will be released on that day? Please explain your answer.

This last part is crucial to solving the puzzle. The inmates are all perfect logicians. Each can reason perfectly from evidence and because they are ALL endowed with the same faculties, each can correctly infer what’s going on in the others’ heads, meaning they’ll come to the same conclusions. 

I’ll accept any serious attempt to engage with the problem, and I’m happy to provide clues, so don’t worry if you’re struggling -- just message me or send me an ask and I’ll help you along.

The prisoner’s constraint, for those of you who don’t know, requires you to write this message without using any of the following letters: b, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, p, q, t, and y.
