Antique commodes are another version of a chest of drawers. These were created in the 18th century and the French and Dutch ones especially were usually very decorative and came in different colours.
How does a typical French commode look like?
While chests of drawers are generally tall and rectangular with multiple drawers, the French ones are typically short and wide. These chests have a curved or convex front and a flat back that goes against the wall.
The antique commodes had ornate detailing. Some also came with attractive cabriole legs or short feet. The cabriole feet eventually evolved into more rectilinear ones and the short legs were replaced with straighter ones. Some French chests also featured a marble top which made them appear even more elegant. Some of the earlier examples of commode also often came with a marble slab top adding to its elegance. Some examples also came with mirrors.
Commodes tend to be functional and provide convenient storage for small things. These also have an additional surface on top for placing items. With time the commode became a subdued form of its predecessors and a purely functional piece of furniture.
