PARIS | Moroccan singer Saad Lamjarred charged with rape in France

PARIS  — A French prosecutor says Moroccan singer Saad Lamjarred has been charged with rape after he was arrested in Saint-Tropez on the French Riviera.

The Draguignan prosecutor’s office said Lamjarred, 33, who was arrested Sunday, was released Tuesday night and placed under judicial control. Lamjarred has allegedly assaulted a woman, born in 1989, in a nightclub in Saint-Tropez. She has filed a complaint.

The Moroccan star was previously arrested in October 2016 for having assaulted a French woman in a luxury hotel on the Champs-Elysee Avenue in Paris. He was charged with aggravated rape and assault. That case has not been brought to trial yet.

Lamjarred is well known on the Arab pop music scene. King Mohammed VI awarded him Morocco’s highest national honor in 2015.

PARIS | French prosecutor: 40 terrorism convicts to be released soon

PARIS (AP) — France’s anti-terrorism prosecutor says about 40 convicted terrorists are due to be released from French prisons this year and next, calling the re-entry into society of the unrepentant ones a “major risk.”

Francois Molins said on BFM television Monday that France still faces a significant threat from homegrown supporters of the struggling Islamic State group.

Molins estimated that 600 to 700 French extremists are unaccounted for in the areas of Iraq and Syria claimed by IS, though many have probably been killed. He says authorities think some organizers of the November 2015 attacks in Paris are among the dead in the Mideast.

Molins says the investigation of the simultaneous attacks at the Bataclan concert hall, Paris cafes and the national stadium that killed 130 people should conclude next year.

Prosecutor asks for Strauss-Kahn acquittal in French sex trial

LILLE (France), Feb 17, 2015:

A French prosecutor asked a criminal court on Tuesday to acquit former IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn of a pimping charge for his role in what investigating magistrates argued was an organised sex ring using prostitutes.

The request from the prosecutor underscored the difficulty of a potential conviction of Strauss-Kahn, 65.

The trial is due to finish this week, but a verdict is not expected immediately.

During the three-week trial in the northern city of Lille, Strauss-Kahn consistently maintained he had no idea the women participating in sex parties were prostitutes, nor that he organized the parties himself — both of which would have had to have been proved in order to be convicted of pimping.
