Bach - French Suite no.5 in G Major, BWV 816

Yesterday was the first day of spring, and today would be Johann Sebastian Bach’s birthday if we all followed the Julian calendar, so I felt why not “celebrate” this un-birthday and un-first day of spring with one of his more lively and happy works. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, I’m sipping coffee, and listening to the harpsichord plucking along to very energetic, lively, and happy music. As with many works in the classical music canon, Bach’s “French” suites are given the title “French” almost arbitrarily. Musicologists argue that the music has a more Italian flavor. Either way, the labels “English”, “French”, or “German/Partitas” are easy ones to help us separate the different sets of keyboard dance suites. The gigue is the highlight for me; so bright and refreshing, like sunshine in the park. What I find more endearing is that Bach’s second wife, Anna Magdalena, was an amateur keyboardist, and Bach had given her a collection of music to practice and play. The first five French suites were in this notebook. What a beautiful gift! Any future boyfriend will have to prove his love to me by writing a set of Baroque dance suites, I’ve decided. It’s the only way to know the love is real.
