Pressing hash is a good form of working meditation for me. The repetitive nature creates an opportunity to get clear about some things. Yesterday, after being in a quiet space for the last week or so, I decide to get my mojo going. I am generally not too hard on myself because as the year ends, and my New Year (it's my birthday too) comes around, I always get to thinking over the last 11 months; a joy and torture at the same time. With a small pile of relatively clean heads to press, I have some singularly focused time. The resin is not 5 or 6 star so melting it effectively requires more than just laying it under the water bottle. While not piping hot, the warmed glass forces my hands to do a jig as I attempt to apply mild pressure without ensuring too much pain. As I roll, I think. With each pass, the resin gives in more and more and my own mind eventually relents and ceases with the eternal questions. And every time I start to rush, the plastic shears, creates a several wrinkles, and I am reminded to go more slowly, more deliberately, and more mindfully. After 15 minutes, when the resin looks and feels like it has melted thorougly, my fingers twitch in anticipation of molding the resin well and revealing a smooth templeball.
