Week 3: Pinhole Camera

This week, each student built a working pinhole camera from an old shoe box. They used the concept of the “camera obscura” along with some tape and tin foil to make a lens and a shutter so they can control the light exposure of the photo paper inside the camera.

The biggest challenge was making the camera box completely light proof. Once it was, students were able to record images onto photo paper. After development in the darkroom, students had a negative image, which they inverted into a normal black and white photo.

Week 5: Film Processing

This week students developed their first roll of film. This required them to extract the exposed 35mm film from the metal case and put it onto a film reel and inside a development tank. Sounds easy, but its not when you realize they must do all that in complete darkness! Here’s what it looked like in the darkroom:
