16. First Kiss
“Mine-san, could you come in here, please?”
Mine almost dropped his pen, startling as Daigo called him into his office. He immediately tidied his already immaculate papers at his desk and rose to follow Daigo inside.
Before Mine had even fully closed the door, Daigo was asking, “Do you prefer red or white wine for dinner?”
Mine frowned; unusual request. “It would depend on the entree,” he answered thoughtfully, closing the door firmly, before turning back, “but in general, I prefer a robust red wine in the evenings.” His eyebrows slowly turned down further, watching Daigo move around his desk, a small smile on his face.
“Excellent, then I’ll know what to tell the sommelier when we arrive,” Daigo answered, finally seating himself behind his desk and turning to his documents.
“W-When we...” Mine’s brain entirely stopped. His mouth hung open for a full thirty seconds before his brain snapped back into action. “S-Sir! W-What do you mean?” he spluttered, stepping to the edge of the desk before he could stop himself.
“Oh, hadn’t I mentioned?” Daigo blinked, glancing up, “We’re going to dinner tonight.”
“We- We are?!” Mine squeaked.
“Yes,” Daigo nodded calmly, leaning back to look up at Mine properly, “I thought it was high time I got around to asking you out.”
Mine flushed. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d blushed for anything or anyone, but his face felt like he was in the middle of a 110 degree fever right now.
“Any objections?” Daigo asked, an eyebrow arched.
Mine eventually managed to shake his head stiffly from side to side.
Daigo smiled. “Good. I’ll pick you up at 8.” He returned to his documents.
Mine blinked and tried to remember how to breathe.
Daigo looked up again after a long moment, realizing Mine had forgotten how to walk too. “You’re dismissed, Mine-san,” he reminded him gently.
“R-Right, yes! Because I don’t work in your office,” Mine gasped, woodenly striding to the door and dashing out of it as quick as he dared, striding right past his desk and not stopping until the got to the bathroom, locked it, and doused his entire head in the sink.
-
8 o’clock rolled around and on the button there was a buzz at Mine’s apartment building. He’d spent the past 3 hours taking an extensive shower and dressing and redressing, trying to decide what was presentable, but not too professional, impressive, but not overbearing. In the end he’d decided on a blue suit, slim cut and sleek, with black silk shirt and skinny navy tie in a complicated knot. Or should he have just gone with his old plum favorite after all? But it was too late now, there was a limo outside and he’d never forgive himself if he kept Daigo waiting.
“D-Dojima-san!” Mine gasped at the door, surprised to see Daigo himself there instead of his chauffeur.
“Mine-san,” Daigo smiled, looking Mine up and down, “That is an extremely well-cut suit... blue suits you.” He looked into Mine’s eyes and his gaze smoldered. Mine wanted to whimper.
“Y-You’re fashionable, as always, Dojima-san,” he managed in return, trying not to drool over Daigo’s all-black ensemble, with skinny bowtie and crushed velvet jacket.
Daigo nodded in acceptance. “Being chairman does come with its perks,” he smirked and turned to offer Mine his arm. Mine bit down on his lip and tentatively took the offered arm, worried Daigo could feel him shaking.
Daigo’s other hand reached over and squeezed Mine’s upper arm as they descended the stairs to the limo. “It’s alright, Mine-san,” he said gently, “I have a few butterflies myself.” Mine looked up at him, staring wide-eyed. Daigo just smiled and shrugged before opening the door and inviting Mine inside first.
Mine sat down and tired to get a hold of himself. “Dojima-san,” he tried. Daigo turned to him after closing the door, eyebrow raised with interest. Mine swallowed and tried again. “Dojima-san, I’m terribly flattered-”
“Shh,” Daigo interrupted, shaking his head, “None of that. None of that modesty and humility you’re always putting on around the office. Tonight isn’t about that.” He sighed, facing forward.
Mine wavered, but sat back, unsure where to look now.
“You’re embarrassingly competent, Mine,” Daigo continued, “And you normally lord it over everyone around you. You’re a bit of an asshole actually.” Mine shifted uncomfortably, but Daigo was grinning. “I like that about you, it’s honest. But I never get to see it. You’re just cowed by my title and power.” He deflated, looking down. “I don’t like you because you are subservient,” he explained quietly, “I like you because you’re not. So tonight...” Daigo looked up at him and smiled again. “Tonight... just be yourself.”
Mine’s pulse pattered like heavy rain in his ears. His breaths came fast, probably depriving oxygen to his brain, and before he knew what he was doing he was leaning forward, cupping Daigo’s face, bringing him closer and... His lips pressed hard against Daigo’s mouth, insistently, forcefully, the only way he knew how to do anything. This was reckless, this was madness, he was going to get fired, he was was going to never see Daigo again- He could feel Daigo’s surprise, his body shifting and freezing, his eyes widening, his lax mouth unmoving, and then kissing back.
Daigo kissed back and where Daigo gave an inch, Mine took a foot. He pressed harder, sucking at Daigo’s lips desperately, pressing tongue and teeth as close as they could get. His whole body pressed Daigo into his side of the car, trying to crawl into his lap when they hadn’t even made it to their destination. He could hear Daigo fumble with the button on the car door, maybe he was going to open it to throw Mine out, but then Daigo pulled him tighter, all but sliding beneath him, clutching Mine close, closer. Mine gasped into Daigo’s mouth and had to break, to look at what was going on just for a second.
Daigo panted beneath him, slicked hair matted and pressed at weird angles against the car seat, his lips open and bruised. Mine swallowed hard and forced himself to look away, finally noticing that the privacy screen was up between them and the driver. It had just been the privacy screen...
“That’s more like it,” Daigo growled, loosening his tie with one hand and curling his other around Mine’s neck, pulling him down for more.
