Feeling kind of miserable in freshers’ week but I just had a solo dance party to Shake It Off so thank you taylorswift for always being able to cheer me up with your music!

Oh, and apparently a friend of mine had her drink spiked yesterday by some asshole at a flat party.  She didn’t drink it, thank god.  She said that she smelt it when she came back and it stank of alcohol.

Hi Brunel freshers! I posted this around this time last year, and am reposting it because Freshers’ Week is right around the corner again:

- Halls are really expensive, start thinking of potential housemates and looking for a house as soon as term 2 starts in January. I’m saving £200 compared to halls every month. - Do everything during Freshers’ Week. EVERYTHING. Don’t be shy. Come see me and my mates at the Jitsu stall during the Fayre or the martial arts expo, we’d appreciate it. - To everyone with an Academic Excellence Scholarship: the hard work doesn’t stop there. You need to get close to straight A’s to keep it, but it’s worth it, I promise. - Get to know your mentors. They’re a massive help if you’re having problems. Same goes with personal tutors. - Academy is not always worth it after Freshers. Go to Liquid in town if you want to have a guaranteed nice time. - Costcutter is ridiculously expensive, there is a Lidl on the far west side of campus. - Explore. It took me months to find the little research garden near campus, the bandstand park in Uxbridge, the little bridge overlooking swans and ducks that I now walk across every day when going to town. - Post goes missing all the time. Be persistent if it does.

- Love your first uni year, despite everything I just said. I did.

so i think uni is going well so far, my flatmates are nice (minus the one that's not here yet) and we went out last night (my first time clubbing) which was good (uv paint stains on clothes woo), but today I had to walk to campus & stuff by myself so I felt pretty lonely but then the lunch thingy with other geographers was nice & I didn't go out tonight so yeah c:

My advice to all freshers would be to not judge uni based on freshers' week!

Freshers' Fair:

In a word?  Crazy.  Belligerent, maybe?  But I loved every part of it.

Students walk through the fair, visit organizations which they might want membership in, and sign up via pen and paper or computer cataloging.  It's simple.  What complicates (and intensifies) Freshers' Fair is the limited time in which students have for exploring the seven rooms lined with societies and sports clubs, and a congregation of newly arrived freshers encompasses space quickly.  The experience was very much like a freshman welcome fair on steroids. 

All of the clubs I was unable to visit with or register are reachable through private websites and email, but here's what groups (off hand) I can recall registering with:

Oxford University History Society

The Science Fiction and Fantasy Society

The Harry Potter Society

The Tolkien Society

Oxford University Society of Bibliophiles

Mind Your Head (a student organization centralized on Mental Health and Wellbeing)

Each constituent college has a private Freshers' Fair, too, so I will attend the New College fair on friday.  Here's to English parties and poetry slams (fingers crossed)!
