The Dylan Thomas Uplands Tour Swansea 2017 PART 1/3 INTRODUCTION Fresh Murals Co. was commissioned by Swansea council in conjunction with Civic Motoring Services, Virgin Media and Envico Engineering to paint 10 utility boxes in the Swansea Uplands ward as part of a Dylan Thomas tour. Swansea was once responsibile for 50% of the world’s refined copper between 1830-1870. We thought it would be fitting to use the colours naturally found in copper to reflect this Swansea history. When copper oxidises over time, a coloured pattina develops that has it’s own peculiarities to it and is often used as a technique in modern art and jewellery. The utility boxes were painted top to bottom in a bright metallic copper. Out of the 10 boxes to be painted, the council asked for 5 boxes to be painted with Dylan’s signature. The remaining 5 boxes were to be painted with a dedicated design, each related to Dylan’s past in Swansea. TO BE CONTINUED IN THE NEXT POST... The Dylan Thomas Uplands Tour Swansea 2017 PART 3/3 FINISHED PIECES A portrait of Dylan was painted outside the Dylan Thomas house... Also nearby, a picture of Dylan’s childhood home, 5 Cwmdonkin drive. Continuing down the road to the entrance of Cwmdonkin park, we painted the water fountain which featured in the poem, “The Hunchback in the Park.” Captain Cat from “Under Milk Wood” was painted in Brynmill. These artworks will be accompanied by a series of wooden plaques, featuring Quick Response codes (QR). Once scanned by a smartphone, the QR code opens to a website featuring information about the life of Dylan Thomas. We hope you’ve enjoyed seeing the process behind painting the utility boxes.
