main gang are third years. fern, jax, ace and fresia are in the same class.
the four of them eat together during lunch, but if fresia and ace are busy sometimes fern and jax eat on the rooftop together. if not, jax turns his chair around and they eat at fern's desk
on weekends they play basketball at the park, 2-on-2
everyone (and i mean everyone.) knows jax is down disastrous for fern.

spends lessons staring either at the window or at jax, but when called on to answer questions he can usually answer them without fail

sleeps in class. is sometimes late to class because of sleeping in, the others try to cover for him sometimes. if not they call him when the bell rings to find him predictably in bed
fern subbed in for the basketball team's practice game once for numbers and was surprisingly good at it because of how the gang play together on the weekends, so he's been named a honourary member since

jax

clubs: basketball team
isn't allowed to wear his hat in school, but wears a set of hairclips instead. fern brings spares with him in case jax loses his
surprisingly good at math. takes biology
home ec king. people flock to him to get free food but he ends up giving most of it to fern or ace. spoonfeeds fern to taste test his food in class
slaps fern with handouts when he falls asleep in class
during club activities, if fern comes to watch, his teammates give him a little nudge and wink to tell him fern's around. if fern's subbing in, he always praises fern a little even if he's on the opposite team
travels to and from school with fern if he can. he's down that bad
he usually cycles to school, and ends up pushing his bike up the hill to fern's place a lot more often than he expects. he lets fern ride on the back if he's tired, though if he wants to spend more time together (most of the time) he just walks. it's nice when he gets fern's arms around his waist when he rides down the road on the hill fern lives on
ace
sits beside fern, in the back row
clubs: disciplinary committee, baseball team
favourite class is phys ed. hates everything else, especially literature
melony is in a different class. she doesn't bother ace during breaks because she has to deal with him at home
has been in the same class as fern for three years. got sat next to each other in first year and became good friends since then
fresia

absolutely horrible at home ec. is great at practically every other class, however
teacher's pet. gets away with shenanigans

fern's childhood friend. they go home together often!
aklove
second year
holds a grudge on fern which isn't reciprocated at all. in fact fern barely remembers who he is, to ace's amusement
(fern actually was on animal pen duty at the same time as aklove, who ended up being bullied by the chickens, and aklove mistook his laughing from the chickens' feathers in his face as an insult)

scenes
second year jax softly laughing at second year fern rubbing the sleep out of his eyes as he visits fern's classroom, "dude... i keep telling you, you sit literally in the second row, you can't just fall asleep in class," and fern sticks his tongue out and refuses to comment. (he got moved to the front just because he kept sleeping in class.)
during the train ride on their school trip, fern falls asleep on the window, but jax shifts him so fern's sleeping on his shoulder instead. when fern wakes up, he swears he hadn't been in this position, but doesn't comment on it, simply content to lean quietly on jax.
summer festival/school trip test of courage... jax, the scaredy-cat of the two, holds fern's hand the entire time while calling him his hero... fern scares him a little at the end to tease him but praises him for making it through.
fern yawning and rubbing his eyes through morning duties, when jax pokes his head into the classroom with a quiet greeting. "i saw your shoes in the locker," he explains, holding up his practice gear. "thought i'd come to see if you'd fallen asleep." fern chuckles softly. "you should go to practice," fern urges, despite the fact that he likes this moment more than he should, but jax lingers by the door, eyes soft, seeming as if he doesn't want to leave as well.
fern falls asleep at jax's desk while waiting for him to finish club activities. when jax comes in, he doesn't wake fern up immediately; instead, he watches quietly with a full heart, memorising how the sunset dyes fern in soft oranges and golds, brushing stray strands of hair from his face.
jax, cupping fern's cheek as he sits on the desk in front of him, quietly asks "can i kiss you?" fern flushes lightly and closes his eyes, inviting the kiss. "are you gonna do it or not?" he asks when jax doesn't take the cue, "please don't make it more embarrassing than it needs to be." jax laughs softly and kisses him.
