Friend Etiquette (Friendiquette): Is it fly for a guy to buy another guy a birthday gift?

If you don't mind reading a rushed, not too well thought out, jumble of words, feel free to hit "Read More". Otherwise, just ignore this post completely.

I have a friend (a surprise I know) classic joke about it being a surprise that I've got a friend har har har whose birthday it is today and as a result on Saturday we are having drinks to celebrate.

The problem is he we hang out and drink (responsibly of course) pretty much every Friday and Saturday anyway. So I should probably do something to make it different to every other weekend, it being his birthday and all.

What does a cool, socially "bleh" guy like myself do? Should I get him something? Would it be "wussy" or "mushy" if I did? Would it be weird because we are both guys? Would alcohol be a safe choice? Would alcohol be a more "manly" way to go? Should I even be worried about how I'll be perceived and just do a nice thing for a mate on a birthday get him something?

No, I shouldn't be worried. Yes, I should do something nice for him. Yes, it will probably be alcohol, but that's a safe bet that he'll like it. It's sorted, I'm glad we had this conversation Tumblr.
