the 20 best pieces of advice i can give for an incoming freshman
always introduce yourself. to teachers. to administration. to the kids around you. dont be someone you arent. this is how you make real friends and find the staff that like you. be loud. be a total nerd. dont care about what others say about you.
gET INVOLVED. sign up for 3 clubs minimum that interest you. weed out your favorite by the end of the first semester. then dedicate yourself to that favorite club second semester. when they send out officer apps at the end of the year, apply!
pick a sport and stick to it. be a leader! be loud and a good teamplayer then you can become team captain which is super cool!
use your free time to do homework. if you have an hour until sports starts then do homework. if you have a free period. do homework.
if a teacher assigns reading DO THE READING ON TIME. DO NOT GET BEHIND. YOU WILL READ REALLY GOOD BOOKS AND IF YOU STAY ON TASK WITH IT, YOU WILL ENJOY IT.
buy your own books for english. it makes annotating easier when you can just write in it.
if a teacher gives you a handout, save the fricken handout and READ THE FRICKEN HANDOUT!
if a teacher does packet-style homework, its the best study guide you can get. if the packet is just collected at the end of the unit and the teacher doesnt check the homework up until then, do the homework the DAY IT'S ASSIGNED AND NO LATER.
use an agenda and keep yourself organized. what i suggest is have six folders (not binders). and label them 'first half homework', 'second half homework', 'first half handouts', 'second half handouts', 'paper', and 'etc'. first half is for the classes you have before lunch and the second half is for after lunch. keep the second half part in ur locker and grab it during lunch. at home keep binders in whcih you can put old work into!
turn off unnecessary electronics when doing homework.
you will probably want to take naps! thats cool! but set a timer and don't sleep for more than an hour.
if the food is gross at school buy some snack bars and just eat a snack during school. then eat a full lunch when you get home!
if its past one in the morning and you still arent done with your homework, go to bed and wake up early to finish.
don't be afraid to ask a teacher for help!
don't talk shit to people you don't trust.
6 hours of sleep minimum if you have the choice.
participate! if they are doing something during lunch go check it out! go to sports games, wear the school colors! get excited about being a part of your school. consider applying for an asb position for the incoming school year! if you live close to your school, you wont regret it!
candy and caffeine are not the answers! keep dark chocolate covered almonds on hand or some snack bars for when u need a pick up at night. i also like things like stringcheese when i dont want something sweet.
if you are working on a project during school, bring ur laptop with you so that you can take quick notes and research without having to wait for computers in class.
DONT USE UR PHONE IN CLASS AND DONT RUN IN THE HALLWAY.
