KNIGHT JIJI…
KNIGHT JIJI!!! silas he’s soooo charming.
because i’m a sucker for friends to lovers in my mind it’s like. when you were younger you liked to sneak out of the palace to have fun in the village. and there’s this boy in the village, and he’s kind of big and gangly and goofy, but he’s so terribly sweet. not just to you but to Everyone. makes stupid faces to cheer up younger kids, helps carry firewood so the grandmothers are never cold, so on and so forth. every time you meet up he’s picked out some new trinket he found because he thought you might like it.
and then you both grow up some more and it’s like. he doesn’t make a big deal of it To You when he finds out you’re the prince, but there is a substantial internal bubble of doubt and insecurity of like. what if he’s not good enough for you. what if he’s Only a village boy in your eyes. (of course this is nonsense)
but he makes a vow to himself then and there that he’ll work to be worthy of you. trains so so hard in the woods near his house and on the increasingly rare occasions you can sneak out to see him he’s always kind of tired but he still grins real big and wraps an arm around your shoulder and knocks his head against yours (and holy fuck does he smell good like. waow.)
and then it’s time for the yearly initiation of new knights, and you Have to attend because you’re the prince and it’s good for you to know at least somewhat the faces of those guarding your life with theirs. it’s boring, usually – monotone recitations of the same oaths, over and over, as they go down the line.
and then you hear a familiar voice. loud and bright and clear, saying, “on my honor and blood do i swear: my shield will be strong, and my heart will be true.”
and as you stare down at him, kneeling on the platform, sword on his shoulder, he risks a glance up to meet your eyes as he finishes his vow: “my fealty is yours, and i am at your command.”
