Singing in this hall has always been a great joy for me; it was the hall I sang in when I auditioned for Eastman, the hall where I presented my Links Scholarship recital last year, and where I have shared my fondest memories with EOT, Collegium, and OSSIA. Director Octavio Cardenas introduced the singers and the scenes and conductor Wilson Southerland accompanied on the piano. The singers at yesterday’s performance were Sofia Scattarreggia as Florencia, Adam Catangui as Arcadio, Isaac Pendley as Alvaro, Madelin Morales as Paula and Hannah Moreno as Rosalba. Florencia en el Amazonas plays March 30, 31 and April 1 and 2 at Kodak Hall at the Eastman Theatre. Directed by Octavio Cardenas and conducted by Wilson Southerland. The opera will be sung in Spanish with English supertitles. Florencia en el Amazonas concerns what its Mexican-born composer described as “the journey to transcendent love…with all its intricacies, subtleties, wretchedness, and glorious happiness,” with a cast of sympathetic and generally believable characters. Garcia Marquez’s story employs magic realism, a narrative technique that is characterized by the matter-of-fact inclusion of fantastic or mythical elements into seemingly realistic fiction.
