Thoughts on the delightful Baldur’s Gate 3 frog?

My excitement about it was quickly assuaged when it very nearly resulted in a TPK for my party because of the Madness.

Anatomically it is weird, but only because the arms are hella long. Not that such proportions don't occur—Leptobrachium definitely has similarly weird limbs. But the rest of the body doesn't fit.

As for the madness… well, amphibian toxins can do weird things. Just, not usually when you hit them with a sword.

What frogs are respectively the Most Spottiest and the Most Stripiest?

Spottiest is pretty unequivocally Heterixalus alboguttatus

And remarkably, I would argue that the winner for the stripiest might be Heterixalus rutenbergi

So both titles would be in the same genus!

Hello Mark! I found out about the limnonectes genus recently - why are some of them knobheads? What is the purpose of knob?

The structure is called a caruncle, which sounds like a made-up word, but then again, all words are made up. It is made of connective tissue underneath skin full of mucous glands (studied histologically by Lambertz et al. 2014), but its function is unknown. However, because it is only present in males, I have a well-founded suspicion that it is involved in sexual selection one way or another. I would guess that it is either (a) very intimidating for other males, (b) actually helpful in physical contests among males, (c) very attractive to females, or (d) some combination of the above.

Don’t Brachycephalus ‘pumpkin toadlets’ also have bones that glow under UV? and can’t hear their own calls?

Well yes but so do you. All bones fluoresce under UV. But Brachycephalus, sometimes called ‘saddleback toads’ (though they are not true toads), have a large bony structure dorsally that fluoresces through the thin layer of skin when exposed to a strong UV source.

Indeed, they allegedly cannot hear their own calls. But this is paradoxical, because calling is extremely energetically costly, and it is not clear why animals would evolve to continue to call if the call is falling on deaf ears. Currently advanced hypotheses are very unsatisfactory imho, so I rather think that we are missing a key part of the puzzle.
