一昨日の金曜日,コロナ禍の為に何度も中断を余儀なくされた後に,めでたく再開催された,こちらの展覧会へ.

この展覧会は,展覧会史上初となる全四巻を揃え,過去に部分的に分かたれた断簡と,原本の欠損された部分を知る事の出来る模本をも取り揃えた特別な展覧会でした.

12世紀の平安時代から13世紀の鎌倉時代に描かれたこの絵巻物からは,当時の人々の慎ましくも心豊かな暮らし振りを伺い知る事が出来,彼らと語り合う様な二時間の時間旅行をする事が出来ました.

素敵な展覧会をありがとうございました.

NATIONAL TREASUR : FROLICKING ANIMALS @ TOKYO NATIONAL MUSEUM

The day before yesterday, I went to see this exhibition, which was re-held after being interrupted many times due to the covid-19 disaster. This exhibition is the first in the history of exhibitions in this country, and is a special exhibition that features all four volumes, as well as several scene drawings that have been partially cut and tailored to the hanging scroll in the past, as well as existing copy scrolls that can know the missing parts. This picture scroll, drawn from the Heian period in the 12th century to the Kamakura period in the 13th century, was able to see the modest and enriching lifestyles of the people of the time, and in my mind I was able to travel for about two hours to talk with them. Thank you for the wonderful exhibition.

Choju Giga, Frolicking Animals

Yesterday, I went to Tokyo National Museum to see "the complete scrolls of Choju Giga, Frolicking Animals." The Choju Giga are very famous old Japanese scrolls of caricatures or "manga" which were drawn in 12th to 13th centuries. It is said that they are the origin of Japanese manga.

The Choju Giga were composed of four scrolls: The fourth (tei) scroll's theme was the scene of sutra recitation. However, the scene was very strange. A very weird figure was painted on the enshrined scroll. It would be a "mantis man" or something.

The third (hei) scroll's theme was cultures of the people. What I found interesting was that all people drawn in the scroll were laughing.  I felt this way,- because of the eyes which liked the eyes in smiley. I think it would be the origin of distinctive smiley eyes.

The second (otsu) scroll's theme was animals. The animals were drawn rather realisticly. There were animals that lived in Japan like cats or dogs, animals that didn't live in Japan like elephants or tigers, and imaginary animals like dragons or kirin.

The first (kou) scroll's theme was personified animals. This scroll is very famous. Personified frogs, monkeys or rabbits were frolicsome.

I was able to see the bone structures of battling oxen. I think the painters would draw the animals without drafts (or there were secret methods?) The painters must have been great artists.

About 1,000 years ago (the Heian Era), a very famous novel was also written. "The Tale of Genji" would be the origin of anime like stories. The first half was a kind of "harem story." The latter half's theme was a very complex love triangle.
