Former stronghold of the Mackenzies, rising to 4 storeys with attic and built in harl-pointed rubble. A later 17th century stair tower has been added to the front and now masks the original first floor entrance. It features a simple off-centre doorway in a plain moulded surround. Gun-loops sit to the ground floor, with corbelled bartizans at the north east and south west angles. A single storey kitchen extension leads off the keep to the west
That folkloric Highland figure, the 19th century mystic known as the Brahan Seer, foretold that 'the Mackenzies of Fairburn shall lose their entire possessions; their castle will become inhabited and a cow shall give birth to a calf in the uppermost chamber.'
