"I doubt I'd be able to take you on now. Maybe in a few years I might stand a chance."
"I would enjoy sparring with you when that day comes."

Children to War [ AU feat. Hikari Kuroshi ]
Thin fingers clutched at his hand, blunt, broken nails biting into his calloused palm. Yet he gripped back nonetheless, holding fast as pained charcoal eyes watched the form before him.
Fear danced in cinnamon eyes, stripped of the maturity the battlefield had brought him, crumbled back to the innocence of youth that he had lost long ago. Pale skin grew whiter as seconds passed, blood spilling from open wounds as life left him. There was nothing to be done, no one to be called. Amidst the battle, any hope of saving this young life had been lost.
The weight of the world had been heavy on slim shoulders for so many years, and yet nothing had ever weighed more than the body in her arms. Not the wood itself, nor the metal and paint that turned unseemly puppetry to human beauty, but the burden of reality sinking down upon sienna eyes. One could not run from mortality, not forever. Not really.
Ebony eyes watched the half tremors course through his frame, the slowly fading light in his own eyes. Dimming, dimming, almost gone.
"...I thought I told you to go." he rasped, his voice beginning to fail as functions shut down.
Ame blinked quietly, feeling an iron grip beginning to close around the area where ones' heart resided. It felt like an empty pit now, becoming filled with the ice cold metal closing in on it. Soon the hardened shell would replace whatever warmth had previously been there.
"Not even you should be alone now." she returned softly.
Anger flared in his eyes, and she almost smiled. Even in his last breaths Sasori was capable of such fury, such rage.
"To allow someone as low as yourself to see me like this..." he snarled. "It is the worst indignation..."
"Then think of me not as a person," she hummed. "But as a conduit."
"For what?"
A smile broke rose lips. "Your swan song, Sasori-sama."
For a moment confusion clouded fading orbs before comprehension dawned. Her smile only solidified his resolve, one quaking hand raising to grip her shoulder, blunt nails biting into her skin. Ame did not protest, keeping her eyes to him as she let her chakra flow, reanimating the nervous system he had awarded himself.
Chakra strings sprung forth from the cavity in his chest once more, and yet more from the fingertips of his unused hand, spinning outwards, arcing through the air to reconnect to their puppet bodies, to bring to life once more the army that was his life's work.
They rose once more, standing at attention for their master's commands, flared bright by unfamiliar, violet chakra. Yokai chakra. Kitsune chakra. Her chakra.
"One last performance." Ame murmured.
"If I destroy this village," he breathed. "You will not last."
She merely smiled. "As I said, believe me to be a conduit."
He questioned no more, commands flowing through chakra strings, sending hordes of his into the streets with unparalleled destructive force. As the village was felled, one body at a time, one lost cause to the next, the more chakra he devoured, the more life fled both figures settled within the barren building, surrounded by bodies.
One final performance, one last masterpiece
for both of them.
