Drabble request: Klaus saves Caroline from a burning building :) could be Klaus as a hybrid or firefighter, whatever you want :)
He could smell the smoke from a mile away and as he went to investigate the stench got stronger. He hadn't noticed until he turned onto her street that it was in fact her street. And it wasn't until he got a little further along that he noticed it was in fact her house that was the source of all that putrid smoke.
His heart would have stopped, well if he had a heart that beat. And within seconds he was pushing through the small crowd of onlookers and staring at the house, wide eyed and almost fearful.
The next thing he noticed, next to the heat and the sound of the fire roaring in front of him was the sound of Liz Forbes' screaming as one of her deputy's held her back. She was thrashing violently and yelling but he hadn't made out her words until just now.
"My baby! Please, someone," Tears were pouring down her ash covered cheeks as she stared at the house. Klaus' throat seemed to go dry as realization struck him.
Caroline was in that house.
Vampires could burn to death. He had seen in himself in Salem during the witch trials, besides a stake to the heart is was one of the top ways that hunters would kill their prey. And Caroline was about to share that same fate.
He turned and stalked towards the sheriff, putting his hands on her shoulders and staring hard into her eyes, "I need you to tell me where Caroline is inside the house," He growled and Liz gasped for air, looking up at him with a mixture of shock and fear, "Sheriff, time is of the essence and I need to know where she is so we don't waste any more time."
"I don't know," She cried and Klaus stepped back, felling his panic set in further.
"Take her out of here, and will someone call the bloody fire department already?" He snarled at the onlookers before turning and stalking towards the house almost angrily. One of the porch beams was aflame as he stepped under it, immediately feeling the flames lick at his skin. He kicked the door open, hearing the wood above it crack as he stepped under. The beam above him fell just as he cleared it and he swallowed, training his ears for any sign of Caroline.
"Caroline!" He shouted, heading towards her bedroom, holding his arm out in front of him so he could see. The smoke filled his lungs and he coughed as he called out her name again.
"Klaus?" Her voice was weak as she called out to him and he sighed in relief, speeding towards the source of the noise. She was huddled in the corner of her room, trying to keep low to the floor. A piece of wood was lodged in her leg and he sped over to her instantly, crouching down beside her and resting his hand next to the wound.
He gave her no warning as he tore the piece out, feeling vervain sting his hand. He looked at her curiously and she shrugged.
"My mom was on the council, old protection thing I guess," She coughed and he nodded wordlessly.
"I'm getting you out of here," He said softly, moving his hands underneath her as she nodded and wrapped her arms around his neck and resting her head on his shoulder.
She smelled like smoke and her usually radiant blonde hair was mussed and coated in ash but he was just happy she was safe in his arms.
"Sweetheart," He looked towards her bedroom door and saw flames climbing up the walls of her room and then he looked to the window that faced her back yard, "I need you to hang on tight to me can you do that?" She nodded into his shoulder and tightened her hold around him, "Close your eyes and keep your face close to me," He kissed her forehead as she whimpered weakly, seeming to sense what he was going to do.
With a quick breath he sped towards the window, leaping out and breaking the glass. She clung to him and as his feet hit the ground she let out a slight whimper and he breathed a sigh of relief.
"Are you hurt?" He asked softly, setting her on her feet on the ground and still supporting her weight as he kept her close to his body. Her leg was bleeding pretty bad and her face was still tucked into his shoulder, "Love," He tilted her chin up and her blue eyes met his, sending him through a flurry of emotions that he wasn't quite ready to accept having yet.
"I'm fine," She breathed, managing a weak smile, "Thank you."
He grinned at her and brushed a strand of her hair back, "You and your mother are coming to stay at my mansion with me. I don't want to hear any complaints about it either," She smiled and managed a light laugh before letting him lead her out to the front of the house just as the sirens signaled the fire department showing up.
