Beer With Natural Flavors
There isn’t much to Boardman, Oregon. I know it mainly as place I had to drive past to visit my mom’s family in Hermiston. The 2010 census gauged the population at 3200. It’s a tiny place. But it’s right near the old Umatilla Chemical Weapons Depot, which until very recently housed tons of VX nerve gas – the same stuff used to kill Kim Jong Un’s brother. So that’s fun.
I picked up a bottle of Bloops Blueberry Wheat because Sarah thought the name was funny. I remembered it from a Willamette Week Drank column. It was supposed to be a good fruity wheat, not like the old Pyramid Apricot Ale or McMenamin’s Ruby. But I’m still skeptical.
Bloops smells pretty good – juicy, blue. But it still tastes like a Widmer Hefe with a little juice mixed in. I’m sure for some people that’s a great thing. But I had trouble getting past the persistent bitterness in the finish. Now, if it was just a little bit sour – that might change my mind.
