Baldur’s Gate 3 (but they’re animals) - Wyll and Karlach! As animals!!
Karlach as a huge war-dog was a very easy pick. So was Wyll as deer, actually. But you know what’s not so easy? Drawing curly horns consistently. Just… don’t examine the horns too closely. It’s fine :)
Sometimes I like to really embrace my interests by mashing them together. I like drawing animals. I like bg3. Hence, I’m going to draw the cast of bg3 as animals. It’s very self-actualising.
Reasoning for animal choices under the cut, if you’re interested!
Shadowheart as a bunny: honestly I think I just saw some very good fanart of her as a rabbit before and it stuck with me. I do think it makes sense. She’s afraid of wolves (prey animal vibe), has a bit of an attitude (I’ve known some very surly rabbits lmao, this may be colouring my perception of them) and slow to trust (prey animal again). But if she DOES trust you she can be kinda sillay! I also picked a short-eared breed because she’s a half-elf. Added detail for you.
Lae’zel as a jackal: lithe and athletic-looking, large ears, tough, often scavengers (fitting for a githyanki). I think it works! An easy pick and fun to draw! They’re also fairly sociable so you can still imagine befriending one. If I ever met a jackal I think it would recognise my innate worth and be my friend. If I ever met early-game Lae’zel I think she wouldn’t even notice me but maybe that’s for the best.
Karlach as a war hound: big, strong, courageous; fearsome and difficult to redirect when roused; moulded into a weapon by outside influences; but also loyal, friendly, kinda goofy! Zariel was the one who had her ears cropped. She didn’t crop the tail because, um, it’s more fun to draw that way.
Wyll as a deer: Bambi being ‘the prince of the forest’ had a lasting effect on my child brain and so whenever a character is princely, I associate them with deer, ESPECIALLY if they actually have familial titles. Plus he’s graceful and energetic. I can imagine a deer being able to dance. Wyll also fights with a sword / is the blade of frontiers (antlers, perhaps?) and gets given horns (antlers, more definitively). The contrast of being a good-aligned character with a fiendish patron translates fairly nicely into “deer but devil”, I think.
Gale as a cat: he HAS a cat (tressym) so there’s a connection there already. I can also envision his academic tendencies translating to being a cozy indoor cat, and if you befriend or romance him he acts like an endearingly besotted lap-cat. He would be kind of a Velcro kitty once he decided you’re trustworthy, I feel. There’s also a fun mental image of Tav like “what do you have, Gale? WHAT DO YOU HAVE” as he slinks guiltily away with a magical item to eat. And cats DO like to chew on plastic. Also who gave this cat an earring? Who pierced his ear?? That’s poor pet ownership, guys.
Astarion as a cat: his VA has said he took inspiration from a stray cat for some of the vibes and mannerisms. He’s the kind of cat that lures you in with friendly behaviour then grabs, bites, and bunny-kicks the shit out of your hand. Also the kind of cat that can be skittish and standoffish, mischievous bordering on malevolent, but if you can get him to trust you, very affectionate… in private. He must maintain his feline grace and composure in the public eye. And he has NEVER fallen off a piece of furniture after a poor dice roll and then pretended he meant to do it, so don’t even ASK, he WANTED to slip off the top of that bookcase, THANK you.
My companion recruitment order always means there’s a period of time where it’s just my pc, a ruthless githyanki warrior, a shar worshipper, a secret vampire,
and Gale.
So the first few interactions with NPCs always go a bit like this.
In my first BG3 run I couldn’t work out how to reach Karlach and then got used to having Lae’zel as my heavy hitter, so I recruited her too late & travelled with her too little to get her approval high enough for romance. Like, I TRIED at the party, and she shut me down…… so with the benefit of hindsight, in this run, I ran straight to her with romance in mind.
I.e. tabby is gay as hell and Astarion completely wastes his time trying to seduce her when there’s a flamin’ hot warrior in camp
I enjoy the early part of the game where the whole party is keeping secrets and/or actively threatening one another. Your player character ends up in charge purely because they’re a buffer (or conduit) to open violence…
I’m making a few comics about a Baldur’s Gate 3 honour-mode run I’m doing (meaning high difficulty & if your party wipes out, it’s game over)! Just until I stop having fun with it :>
“Baldur’s Gate 3 (but they’re animals)” - where I draw pictures of characters from BG3, but they are animals! You see the vision. You see it. It’s self-apparent.
Once all my designs are settled (the six origin companions are done but I’ve plans for other characters as well) I’ll be drawing some character interactions and dialogues, so if you have a favourite to suggest, let me know!! It’s fun translating them into animal body language!
At level 3, I believe, when he specialises in evocation, Gale’s AOE spells don’t deal damage to friendlies anymore. I did not realise this until my second playthrough, even though I’d definitely been catching party members in fireballs before - I just figured it was worth a bit of friendly fire to hit so many enemies at once!
What is it like being caught in a fireball that does you no damage, I wonder? Kinda nice and toasty? Or still really, really hot?
