NHRC To Set up Fresh Probe Panel On SARS

The National Human Rights Commission said on Tuesday that it was about to set up an Independent Investigation Panel to look into human rights violations by the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad and other segments of the Nigeria Police Force.

A statement by the commission’s Assistant Director Public Affairs, Fatimah Mohammed, said the proposed IIP would be set up “within the next one week”.

My first job in the United Nations Secretariat, 28 years ago, was as a Human Rights/Electoral Officer in the UN Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) that governed Cambodia for a transitional period after its civil war. I trained the Cambodian police on human rights standards in policing. They had a tendency to behave like #FSARS but solid training restrained that inclination. Then we organized and conducted elections and handed over to an elected civilian Cambodian government. I was then posted to UNHQ in New York as a Political Affairs Officer. The Nigerian Government contributed a police contingent to the UNTAC Mission. One day, chatting with a Nigerian policeman in the contingent he told me: “my brother, after earning $6,000 a month in salary and allowances here for two years, I can’t go back home and be doing ‘Wetin you carry’.
