Nicholas knew full well he should’ve told Aphrodite about Maria, he justified at the beginning that it wasn’t going to turn into anything so why confide the deepest, darkest secret he kept buried inside. Then he fell for her, completely and utterly, in a way he never thought he would again. Then how could he tell her? How could he look the woman he loved in the eyes and confess that his actions had gotten his first love killed? He couldn’t bare the thought of facing that. He’d lose her for sure. So he slowly distanced himself from her in the days coming up to the anniversary, he made stupid excuses and was more rigid at work than he’d been since she started there. Until one day he just didn’t turn up, he took a few days out around this time of year every year just to remember her, get blind drunk and try suppress his guilt. Of course he couldn’t tell Aphrodite that so he simply did the selfish thing, turned off his phone and disappeared.
Axel was going over the accounts, a job usually delegated to either Ryan or Nicholas, both of whom were awol when he overheard someone quizzing his security detail, without glancing up he nonchalantly told her, “He’s probably visiting with Maria, he always spends this time of year with her.”
