Kiera and Pity were far from close. The other eluding society so often that Kie would be surprised to learn she recognised her face, let alone her name. Of course, being recognised wasn’t always a good thing. People whispered about Serendipity. Rarely anything good. Though Kiera didn’t really share the sentiment, it was impossible to pretend that she hadn’t heard it.
Perhaps it wasn’t always a bad thing. “I’m really glad you came.” Without the backhanded comments from those prioritising being in the loop over empathy, the words would’ve been empty and generic. A participation sticker. “I mean it. Volunteering is, like, super cool.” Which was a super lame thing to say!
