IS A RIGHT WING ATTITUDE THE FORMULA TO A HAPPY INDUSTRY?
source: formula fun
Those of you who follow this blog will have noticed that we don't shy away from calling out both the media, and the Industry that brought us all together, on the extreme double standards exhibited day in and day out. Today's particular brand of mess comes in the form of global gossip tabloid Shattered Gossip targeting one Jackson Otto for the umpteenth time this month - and we're only six days in!
Today's particular attack raises a multitude of questions - and eyebrows - for us, and no doubt for readers too.
It's no secret to any Formula 1 fan that Jackson Otto was involved in a serious crash just last year. The crash resulted in an array of injuries for Otto, his shoulder being the most debilitating of the lot, putting an end to what could have been a victorious season for the Aussie driver. His return to the track was further delayed by a series of gruelling physical therapy sessions in an attempt to regain full function of both his arm and shoulder, followed by the rather sudden departure of his long-term personal trainer Asher Boyd. With the arrival of Dante Lee, it appears Otto has been back on track and, seemingly, looking healthier than ever.
However, does this not raise the question of whether we should look beyond the toned physique of our favorite drivers, and delve further into their psyché? Perhaps Jackson is fighting fit and looking as handsome as we've ever seen, but when will Head Honcho Michael Baxter and others like him take it upon themselves to ensure that the mental health of drivers is prioritised too?
Furthermore, who is protecting our beloved drivers from the onslaught of heinous articles being dropped, psycho-analysing them in ways that could only cause futher harm to their mental well-being?
There is a lack of care within this industry that largely contributes to poor mental health, as well as showcasing a rise in misogyny, queerphobia, and racism. Drivers such as Corey Lang and Brendon Fitzgerald are subjected to hateful slurs spat at them both by fans and others in the paddock - a kind of violence that not even Baxter himself is safe from - and there appears to be a Don't Ask, Don't Tell approach to queerness within the community. Drivers like Elias Hewitt, Jackson Otto and Hayden Bridger are ridiculed for exhibiting even the most basic friendship with other men, with accusations being directed at them from every corner, with reporters branding them as gay just for daring to be comfortable within their own skin. Dante Lee, in fact, recently went public about his relationship with Shattered Diamonds' very own Henry Bly, resulting in a shower of hateful comments underneath each and every one of his posts, as well as comments below Otto's - some going as far as to warn him away from the Brit, insisting that his influence over Otto's training might contaminate him. With misleading, clickbaity headlines such as Jackson Otto Out? printed across every newspaper and website in the country, nobody is truly safe from the harmful implications that so-called journalists appear to be running rampant with.
Of course, the wives and girlfriend's of drivers are in no way safe from this vitriol either. Persephone Blake has come under fire today for being the cause of Otto's recent shortgivings on the track - if you could even call them that. With Hewitt taking the lead, could it simply be that perhaps Ferrari simply have a rising star taking the track by storm, and not that Otto himself is in any way failing his team? And why should Blake take the brunt of the criticism, just for existing by his support - as a constant beacon of love and support, at that.
What could both Ferrari and the sport overall be doing to help protect its drivers better? Is there a way that the sport that we all know and love could move forward, for the better, and work to undo the tireless biases that seem ingrained into its culture?
Leave your comments below and let us know what you think!
@coreyxjune: lowkey why is this just not giving @coreyxjune: where is the drama. where is the FLAIR? @coreyxjune: i don't wanna see justin lang floundering around heavy machinery while he makes jackson otto's injury seem like a minor scratch @coreyxjune: f2 is giving me LIFE mind you i wanna see corey lang and june perry head to head and dominating? i wanna see them giggling like school girls after a sexy lil race? i wanna see hayden bridger serving up LOOKS on that podium babes
