👀 + when did you know you were in love with Edie?

"I was about fourteen, my dad got really drunk, drunker than he'd been in a couple of months. He broke two of my ribs, fucked my lip up, trashed the trailer. I don't remember why, he always found some bullshit reason to fly off the handle. I could handle his shit for the most part but on nights like that when it got too much and I thought this motherfucker is actually going to kill me, I'd sneak over to the Tellos.

Edie wasn't a fan of me but she'd let me sleep on her floor because I guess she figured that I didn't have anywhere else to go and her mom was always nice to me and her dad took me fishing sometimes so it felt like a safe place to be. It was until about three in the morning when Switch showed up beating on the door yelling about how I better get home or he'd drag me home. Edie let me have the bed that night so I thought I was dreaming at first and his drunk ass probably did too when the door opened and there's Edie with Bruce's baseball bat.

I don't know what the fuck she thought she was going to do with those twiggy arms of hers but I do know she was going to try fuck him up. He probably thought that was funny. Bet it stopped being funny fast when Javi was outside with his shotgun.

I didn't have any other family. I didn't have friends. My dad was my whole world and when your whole world tells you over and over that no one gives a fuck about you and never will, you believe it. But I knew then that Edie cared about me and she cared about me in a way that I could understand.

My world got a little bit bigger after that. Not by much. But enough.

✈ - an eye-opening memory

"When I was fourteen I was out on the boat with Edie's dad Javier one time after a big fight he had with Edie's older brother Ciro, Ci was supposed to go on the water with him but he was high like he always was and said some real fucked up shit to his dad. Javi told to go back and sleep it off and they'd talk about it later. My dad would have killed me for saying half of that to him so when we got out there I asked how he was just going to let him talk to him like that and do nothing about it. He said it was easy not to hit him even when he was hard to listen to."

"I bought Edie's mom flowers on Christmas Day the first one I was invited to as her boyfriend to say sorry for Christmas Eve. We didn't really do holidays in the trailer growing up so I think it all got a bit overwhelming for me. I ended up getting into it with Edie's oldest brother Bruno, who rightfully dragged my ass outside when I told him it would a better Christmas the year after because he'd probably be coming home from active duty in a box and no one would have to hear his whiny bitch voice correcting me on how I talk. He should have kicked the shit out of me in the front yard for that, but Goldie and Javi wouldn't let him."

Do they know how to fish?

"Yeah. I'm actually pretty good at it. Javier taught me and he was the best fisherman I knew so I'll take his word for it for every time he said I had a knack for it. Never had anyone spend that much time teaching me something just for the love of it before that, and I got why he loved it as much as he did after a summer out on the boat."
