bear had been going door to door with his clipboard all day in the alabama heat. by this point, he was a little fatigued, but his dog had been loving the exercise, and, of course, all of the petting from the various townspeople. next on his list were the mathis’s, and, if past experiences were reliable, a sure thing. he was surprised when it wasn’t them that opened the door, but their granddaughter. still, though, he smiled and started his spiel. “hey... it’s libby, right? i’m trying to gather signatures on behalf of our county residents. our board of supervisors is currently trying to block section 41-9-291, code of alabama 1975, relating to the alabama underwater cultural resources act, to amend the definition of cultural resources to delete the language that includes items that are eligible for, or listed in the alabama register of landmarks and heritage.”
@carolanandclover: Clover looks so cute in her reindeer costume, I keep spontaneously tearing up.

3. have you taken someones virginity?
“yeah, a handful of times. once, last year, i slept with a professor who blurted out in the middle of the whole thing that it was his first time. it wasn’t particularly enjoyable for me, but i think he had a good time. plus, i passed calculus.”

“i have a couple of people i’m lucky enough to feel that close to, but my go-to is always libby.”

“honestly, i don’t think i have. i don’t cry very often.”

“yeah, she’s next door.”

“no. there are certain people that i’ll look at once and know that i’m going home with them, or that i want to. but that’s not love, as far as i know.”

“it was the cheetah girls, and i brought libby, because she’s my cheetah sister.”

september: how much schooling have you had?
“this is my senior year. my grades are not… the best, but i’m still set to graduate in the spring. and after the year we’re having, i’m going to be glad to get out of here.”
june: describe your relationship with your father
“we’re not close, and we never have been. he travels a lot. as a kid, i thought he was super cool because he would bring home art from all over the world. turns out, that’s about the only thing i ever liked about him. he’s cold and distant, and has never once seemed even slightly interested in me, except for when it came time for me to go to college. he and my mom are obsessed with their public image. it’s absolutely ridiculous.”
december: who do you go to when you’re feeling down?
“my first call is always libby. she’s been my first call my entire life. she just… knows me. she knows what i need before i even tell her what’s wrong. i would be a much bigger train wreck without her.”
