The stream of melodies echoing inside of Ivy’s dorm room mostly consisted of musicals because she didn’t want to do the cliché thing of listening to sad music because she’s upset. That and it gave off the illusion she was fine to anyone who wasn’t close enough to her to know the truth. That Theatre was her escape from the real world. It always had been and the only time she drowned herself in it alone was when she was really low. It’s one of the few positive constants in her life, one of the few things she has some semblance of control over. She was the one thing in life she could control. The one thing she could always have.
She tried not to think this way too often because of course she knew she’d always have Benny. She believed in her soul that they’d be together forever just like he’s always promised. And now more than ever he’s been making sure she’s ok. Not leaving her to pick up the pieces of her broken hart all alone. She’s not sure if she’s ever gotten them all on her own despite how much she likes to put it on display like it’s complete when all she’s down it duck taped the holes and painted them to make it look like it. She could never let people know that she needed someone, when she felt others needed her more. How could she mope about her father leaving their family when her mother and sister needed her to be strong. Needed her to be that steady hand he should’ve been. Motivate them to keep going on after a loss of love so dear. To prove to them that this was good enough. To prove to him even if he never gets to see it that they were good enough. That drive to be perfect all on her own stemming from that first betrayal and every one after just was fuel to the fire.
She didn’t tell people but her grandfather was sometimes cruel to them as well. Her grandmother one of the sweetest people you’d ever meet. It was his pushing that finally drove them to get their own place after staying with them only a short while. He was a gentleman in the public eye. He wasn’t a saint, but most people don’t realize even demons have wings. They were once angels too. Don’t trust, don’t believe. Life isn’t the fairy tales you read about. The ones that Disney promises. The story doesn’t end at happily ever after.
So how did the skeptical, pessimistic, secluded girl she’d become befriend a guy like Benny? The love and persistence he shows now is the same thing he had then and it won her over. To be honest, despite it all she was always still skeptical of him. She still held her breath in high school, even after they became close, that one day he’d walk away too. She’d smile and nod, but she was afraid that come the end of senior year they’d fade like friendships tend to do. She was friendly and kind, but she didn’t let people in and especially not boys. Not till him and Marcus. Even then it was just a bit. Just enough to hurt if things did turn sour, but not enough to destroy her like her father had her mother. Things were good for a pretty little while until Marcus cheated before running off with another girl.
She wished she could say she couldn’t believe it. She wished she could break down and cry to get out all the pain she’d been storing up, but she couldn’t. She couldn’t break a heart that wasn’t ever whole. The pain of abandonment from her father, the fear of inadequacy from her mother, and the illusions built up around her grandparents, along with all the little bumps along the way of insignificant people, all came crashing down with Marcus’s final betrayal of the heart.
She was ready to shut it down for good, but there Benny was. He somehow started picking up the pieces before she even realized it. Him and Siren gave her the warmth of love she never received anywhere else. Warm enough to thaw the coldest of hearts. It was then she finally started to believe in him. Finally realized that despite everything there was a silver lining of hope even in the darkest of times. Even after the incident with Siren, it didn’t hurt as badly. Not because she didn’t hold Siren to the same level as him in her heart, or because she became so focused on making Benny feel better she couldn’t focus on her own emotions (though that was definitely a big part of it as well), but because She still held hope. The hope that Siren and Benny had both created and nursed in her. She never fully lost hope in Siren, and Siren was her proof men and women can both hurt you. Effectively getting rid of her gender bias before coming to college.
Now listening to songs with the phrase “Wishing only wounds the heart” on replay in her mind. Normally she’d take that to mean it was time to stop wishing for a brighter day. Good thing she was scrolling through her Instagram seeing pictures of them together over the years, and decided to change the station to something more upbeat and positive. Something he’d be happy to hear walking in the door. Because she was certain he would be any minute now.
Wishing does in fact, wound the heart, but she’d finally found someone worth hurting for. Worth taking the chance of believing in. Worth wanting to be ok for once in her life! Not for others sakes, but for her own because she knows he wants her to be happy too. Is she still afraid that one day he won’t be around? Yes terrified, but she knows he’d never go willingly. Not to mention she’d rather deal with the pain of him walking away then have never had the joy of letting him in. Her heart was a mess, but it was their beautiful mess, and she wouldn’t change it for anything in the world. So even now that her mother is gone, and she feels like the pieces are slipping through her fingertips, she knows she’ll be ok because he’s there. Catching them.
He’s done the impossible, and she loves him. Forever and always.
