Dance with the Devil

A continuing one-short with @askyuivalanaki​ that started on Discord. It involves the first meeting between Serena and Dr. Baldman...which, you know, devolves into nothing but tension and sass.  Let’s get started!

It wasn't very often that they all found time to meet up together, being on separate ships made that difficult, but when they did arrange time together, it was always a fun time and well over due. Yui was relaxed with Serena, not a feat many could claim, and Valerie was completely enamoured by the avian witch, who made the freckled face girl feel normal. Anaki was fond of her too, but something did not sit well with the large wolf.

Since they had left the tavern where they had lunch, a scent had caught his nose, familiar and foreboding that sent his fur standing on end and his entire body tense. His ears were pulled forward as he kept looking around.

Walking down the main street , away from the tavern, the girls found themselves combing through the aisles of the local open market. Serena was excited at the chance to visit with her friends again, and even wore the outfit that Val had made for her in the past; proudly showing off how well it suited her form.

At first, Anaki’s shift in body language went unnoticed as the girls exchanged stories and caught up over what happened in the past few months. That was...until they spotted him, frozen in the middle of an aisle a couple paces behind them; hackles raised and trying to pick up scents from different directions. ——

Yui looked back at Anaki, when he was tense her own instincts went into alert. She twisted her ears and sniffed, but even with the Mink in her blood, she wasn't as able to differentiate the smells and sounds like Anaki, who pulled back his upper lip and bared his teeth as he snapped his head up. The snarls that came from his throat was like a different animal standing there.

Standing ontop of a stall was a large creature, larger then Anaki. It's body was engulfed with green and black flames, almost like it was more astral then physical, it had to long horns on its head, above it's glowing eyes, that curled back. It's long tail was more like one would imagine a demon to have, long and whip like with what looked like a spade at the end. Yui and Valerie froze as they looked up, instinctively Valerie had grabbed Serena's arm.

"Phantasom..." Yui whispered the name as the hound stood there, watching them.

The witch took the sight of the creature in, being sure to process every detail it to memory. This was the first she had witnessed him in person, but more than once had Valarie hesitantly told her about the monster that aided in her nightmares. She grasped her hand with her own,  “Get ready, everyone.”

And that was the only warning she gave before she began to scream hysterically at the top of her lungs. Drawing the attention of everyone in the marketplace. Almost instantaneously the crowd began to follow the hysteria, bunching and clumping in every direction in an attempt to flee.

She had just a moment to make this work. She grasped onto Yui’s hand and drug them into the crowd. With all the sounds and scents colliding together in a tight space, it was the only chance she had of losing Phantasom, even for just a short time. ——

Yui stumbled behind Serena, caught off guard by the witches scream as Anaki took off after them, which was hard to do in the crowd of people shouting and moving in all different directions.

Phantasom watched and snorted as he moved across the rooftops, as jumping down into the crowd would be madness and would only prove for him to lose them sooner.

The three girls shoved against the crowd as they moved farther away from Phantasom and hoped to put some distance between them, just anything to regain their senses as just the sight of the firey hound had shaken them deeply.

"That...was really quick thinking Serena-san!" Valerie said.
