I beg your finest fucking pardon? I don't hate Val. I barely even know Val. I love Teddy, which is the main thing here. He's my best friend, and he's been hurt a lot. It hasn't escaped my notice these past weeks that Val and her friends have been... speaking ill of him. Whatever little crush she's harboring is none of my business, but I won't stand for people talking shit about my guy. I don't hate her, I'm just protective.

𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐝 of comfort bee found in having allies in the city. most of her friendships were born out of convenience; proximity to power, mutual usefulness, knowing who to call when something inevitably went to shit. having a district attorney in her orbit just made sense. it was the entire reason she’d approached val in the first place, catching her outside the courthouse with an easy smile, a quick compliment on her outfit, and an offhand suggestion they grab drinks sometime because, obviously, they were the two hottest women in the building and it would’ve been ridiculous not to. and thus, a happy hour routine had been born. and what started as strategy had settled into something she actually enjoyed. “so,” she started, already knowing she was about to piss herself off all over again, “tell me about the masquerade.” a sound escaped her throat, something bitter that only resembled laughter in its cadence. “because i didn’t even get to go enjoy the whole private island fantasy and now i’m stuck cleaning up the mess it caused.” she raised her brows, tilting her head. “was it at least worth it? or did everyone almost dying kind of kill the vibe?”

heath wasn't used to being the one unsettled. there'd been a time val's gaze would light up when he entered a room; now she wasn't even looking at him, not really, and that stung more than he'd admit. it only reminded him she knew too much - she had seen some cracks in the past but this time was different. he hated how unsure and exposed he felt as he cut through the crowd, every step toward the woman chipped at his nerve. the man stopped beside her, letting his eyes roam over her face, trying to guess what she was thinking without asking "i'd be' for forgiveness, but i have such bony knees" he teased, a self satisfied grin lingering on his mouth
