im rereading ftlod (I have to every time I get ready to write a new chapter. it helps me catch the unanswered questions I still need to answer.) and I love this part so much [see pic & then come back] because it’s the true source of Sasuke’s anger in this moment. he sees not just someone he perceives to be better than him, but someone he could’ve been had he not allowed his incessant need for revenge to guide his actions. sure, his reasoning for continuing down his chosen path had altered a few times over the years, but revenge was at the core of it all—and that revenge was rooted in a sinful level of pride and arrogance, two things he obviously struggles to grasp. yet here he was, forced to reckon with the outcome of his pride and arrogance. because kakashi had actually done everything within his means to make sure his student would rise to the status he had achieved and then surpass him—and sasuke may have surpassed him in strength but that was all. he’d convinced himself all he needed was strength, but here he was forced to see that was rooted in arrogance, too, because he’d finally figured out why he’d ever need more than that.
