Unpopular Opinion

let’s fight, I guess

Jake’s flash forward was......... 

out of character. 

In most scenarios, except for ones where you’ve gotten very close to him (shown by that super duper smiley face) or are dating him.

What I mean by that is. Jake has been consistently characterized as selfish through the books. I don’t mean that in a negative way! I just mean that, his first priority is taking care of himself. And that’s understandable. He’s been through a lot of life and death situations, focuses a lot on his survival, has lost people close to him so doesn’t let others get that close. 

 Now take that character trait and think about how that’s going to express itself after five years of being held prisoner and tortured. Do you really think he’s going to have any hope left after that? Nah. I’m thinking his survival instincts have gone to even higher levels. Cover your ass is the top priority, flee the moment you get. 

So after five years he’s going to take time fighting and struggling to go back and save this person who he’s known for all of a month or so? (Again, I’m talking scenarios where MC and Jake haven’t started dating or haven’t gotten close.) 

I don’t buy it? 

You know who I would buy that flash forward from? A character who’s shown consistently, from the moment of introduction, to put other’s needs and safety first, to the point of self sacrifice? 

You know who. I don’t need to say it, because it should be very obvious to you.

That flash forward should have been his, I feel like.

But it went to Jake because the writer felt like pulling on the fangirls’ heartstrings. And it worked. Two of the play testers cried. Everyone in the tag is crying. 

I’m sorry, but it’s not worth the character inconsistency. If you wanted to have an emotional moment like that, either do something else with Jake, or do it with someone where the self sacrifice would actually be consistent.
