I like big books and I cannot lie

So if you've bothered to read the top of the page, you will know that I love to read. And when I say I love to read, I mean I LOVE to read. And I do it often. I carry around a book in my purse. I have frequent flyer miles at the library. I've read Pride and Prejudice at least 5 or 6 times. I am that kind of book nerd. And I read all sorts of things. Fiction, non-fiction, comic books, manga, young adult, fantasty, the classics. But mostly my interests lie in the realm of fantasty (Wheel of Time, Patrick Rothfuss, Brandon Sanderson, Robin Hobb, etc.) and psychological non-fiction.

I've long thought about starting a blog in where I just talk about what I've recently read. I think reading is very important, and I want to share that love to the world. I honesty don't understand people who say they never read, or they don't like to read. There are so mnay different kinds of books out there I don't see how you couldn't possibly find something you like.

So while I will most certainly be posting things I find around the interwebs that I love and pertain to my favorite fandoms (Sherlock, Doctor Who, Arrested Development, Joss Whedon), I think I will also start posting some stuff about the books I'm reading. I'm not going to do every book, because that would be a lot of posting. I read at least one book a week and possibly two depending on how long they are. (And if you're sitting there, all like, "whatever I read 3-4 books a week or a book a day," go fuck yourself. I work 40+ hours and go to school. Plus, this isn't a contest.)

So start things off I'm currently reading Animal Wise by Virginia Morell.

Morell writes for publications such as Science and National Geographic. She has done a lot of writing about animals and cognition science and decided to write a book all about it. I haven't finished the book yet so I don't want to do a review. My basic point is to open a discussion. While she is just describing the research being done and their findings, it makes for a pretty good argument that animals have rich internal lives. They talk to one another, feel pain in a manner similar to humans, have imaginations. As an animal lover and a pet owner, and someone who has worked with animals in a behavioral capacity, no one can convince me that animals don't have personalities and that they are incapable of feeling or processing pain in a manner other than just a reflexive response. I think most people would agree that dogs and cats and horses and all sorts of animals that make common pets are more than just dumb animals. But that's because we've spent time with these animals, gotten to know them. What about fish? Or insects? Morell discusses work involving these animals, and I found myself to be surprised at how complex such a simple seeming animal can be.

So, ask me a question, give me your opinion. What do you think? You can be as sciencey as you want. I like statistics and jargon so bring it on. Or don't, put it in laymen's terms, make it simple and easy. Doesn't matter to me, I just want to start a conversation. Even if you haven't read this book let me know what you think of the topic in general. And if you've read this book, even better.
