Columbus Day

I don't know how to say this eloquently...so in an effort to appropriately capture the essence of how I feel on the matter, I'll just say it.  FUCK Columbus and the ships he and his men rode in on.  Damn the lies he told to the Spanish court after he was taken in, watered and fed by the indigenous people he met. Damn them for sending him back, and armed for genocide no less! Damn the man who led by a physically assaulting and emotionally traumatizing example; the man who gave children to his men for sexual consumption. Fuck the historical trauma that has since been taken advantage of by anyone who has set foot on this foreign soil. Fuck the taking of a seed that these foreigners didn't sow in an attempt to massacre nations of sovereign people. What Columbus didn't realize is that while he may have had his slaves and the opportunity to take that which did not belong to him, and even somehow managed to be marked down in history as a great and brave discoverer, it is WE - the ancestral survivors - who discovered Columbus. His filth. His greed. His blatant disregard for life.  He wanted to eradicate the people that helped him but since his time on this continent, the indigenous people are the only ones still breathing. We are alive, we are here and he has not triumphed like historians will try to tell you. Feel free to wish me a "Happy Columbus Day" and I'll feel free to hand you a copy of "Lies My Teacher Told Me."
