The look of a promise

(NIV) Genesis 17.13 - Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised.  My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant.

The fact that the symbol is everlasting shows a glimpse of how long God will allow the covenant to last.  God's covenant lasts as long as man will follow the rules that go along with it.  The covenant is also readily available to see, just like how God's will may always be visible for us to follow.  It could also be a picture of bringing forth more righteousness by bringing in more people.

(NIV) Genesis 17.12 - For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner -- those who are not your offspring.

The symbolism behind it being eight days could be telling of why its done also.  I have also heard that it is the safest time for that as well.  The fact that all those that are with the Israelites will also be part of the covenant shows that God may allow anyone to become like His chosen ones.  It is as though God will make it attainable for anyone to join in on His will in the right way.
