As the eruption of Fuego Has been front-page news, and the tragic loss of life is starting to be known, I wanted to add some coffee-specific comment. The heritage city of Antigua is not directly impacted as much as nearby Alotenango. Smallholder farms we were buying from there are devastated (from my visits these were largely not farm lands people lived upon). But more importantly is the loss within many extended families who had someone living in the Alotenango zone, many from the pyroclastic flows. Coffee will grow again. The human loss is what is so devastating, and I’m afraid the numbers will increase. People we work with there are ok, but everyone knows an affected family. #fuegoeruption our thoughts are with them! We will post if we find ways to assist that are verified by our contacts there.
