Gene Fullmer held onto his NBA middleweight title when he stopped Carmen Basilio in the 12th round in Salt Lake City #OnThisDay in 1960. Referee Pete Giacomo halted the fight with just six seconds left in the round. Basilio, still on his feet, protested violently. But it was obvious that he was weary and headed for defeat. When the two fought a year before Fullmer stopped Basilio in 14 rounds for the vacant National Boxing Association crown. Basilio fiercely disputed the stoppage, tried to get at Fullmer, tried to charge the ref and generally went berserk. His handlers restrained him and literally escorted him back to his corner. When Giacomo intervened Basilio screamed: "What do you mean? What are you talking about?" Then cocking his fist, he said to the referee, "I'll give you one."
