The alarms sound just as Tony’s returning from the lab.
Corridors are plunged into darkness, and subtle red lights guide him to the upstairs landing strip. By the time he arrives, the Iron Man armor has unfolded from the nanobot casing and wrapped him up securely, just leaving his face exposed to watch the rest of the team hustle into the Quinjet.
When the faceplate snaps closed, FRIDAY comes to life with a preliminary read out and introduction into the live comms. Coordinates and live footage are playing in the corner of his vision.
“What do we have, Cap?”
It’s easier to just let the big guy take charge when reviewing logistics. Tony will more than likely make it there first anyways— he just needs someone to point, and he’ll more than happily shoot.
A few greetings come through sleepily— it’s two in the morning, for fuck’s sake— before Steve bothers filling them in. At this point, Tony is already en route to their destination in… Vegas?
“Who the hell is tearing up Sin City this early in the morning?” Tony asks rhetorically.
“Don’t know, Stark,” Cap answers, of course he does, “right now it looks like there is magical activity on site, as well as other suspicious activities. It seems as though there is a mastermind behind the attack— someone unrevealed— directing multiple groups of armed men to methodically take apart the larger casinos.”
“Any leads?” Sam prompts.
“The trace of magic definitely narrows it down. We haven’t seen trademarks of other super villains besides that. And there’s minimal violence, although most of our usual suspects won’t hesitate to use violence anyways.”
Tony rolls his eyes. Steve is always slow to make assumptions, but good with his instincts— something that makes him a natural leader. They’re all thinking Loki, all know it’s probably Loki, but no one will say it until they have eyes on him.
Steve, Sam and Natasha discuss strategy on the ground, with minimal input from the others. Tonight, the eight of them are just eager to get in and out with minimal casualties. Clint and Bucky will most likely hitch a ride to a rooftop while Sam, Tony and Vision fly high— leaving Steve, Natasha and Wanda on the ground.
It works well. Time after disagreement to heal has strengthened them as a team, as a family, finally. Somedays, Tony almost feels as though he can trust the people living around him.
When they arrive, the Avengers quickly realize how over the conflict is. The streets are flooded with terrified civilians, drunk tourists, and several black vans are being loaded with millions in profit.
Tony stays up top, letting Steve and Sam confront the goons below. Whoever’s in charge of the chaos, they wouldn’t have done it remotely.
