Fritz Syberg (July 28, 1862 - 1939) was a Danish painter associated with the Funen Painters, many of whom had studied at the Zahrtmann School (the rival school opposing the Royal Academy at the time). Syberg attended the Academy for a short while but then skipped over to Zahrtmann as one of his earliest acolytes and became much more of a colorist under his tutelage…

Niels Hansen (June 22, 1880 - 1946) was a Danish marine, landscape and portrait painter, regarded as one of the four great Fynbomalere. He studied briefly at Zahrtmann's school and spent some time in Paris where he picked up some influence from the Impressionists, and other than that he was self-taught.

Hansen was a co-founder of Grønningen and frequently showed at Charlottenborg. He settled on the small island of Thurø, south of Funen, and lived there for 25 years, not least because he could indulge his passion for yachting there.

Jens Birkholm (Nov. 21, 1869 - 1915) was a Danish painter in the social-realist (muckraker) tradition, who spent much of his youth traveling through Europe to dodge military service. He particularly enjoyed Berlin, where he spent many years painting the poor and homeless in the city’s shelters. He also acquired TB there, which eventually became the death of him.

From 1902 to his death he lived in Faaborg, Denmark, where he was among friends and colleagues - thee Funen Painters. Influenced by them, he became more of an Impressionist artist, focusing on landscape and portrait painting.

Johannes Larsen (Dec. 27, 1867 - 1961) was a Danish artist, and one of the so-called Funen-painters. He is best known for his bird paintings, inspired by the landscapes of Funen and Western Jutland (where he would often spend his summers), but he was also a master at capturing the movement of water as witnessed by this canvas.

Lauritz Mikkelsen (Feb. 25, 1879 - 1966) was a Swedish-born, Danish painter. He studied at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen in the 1890s and later settled on the island of Funen. He is sometimes associated with the group of Fynbomalere...

His art was mostly animal and landscape painting, and he is well represented at Danish regional museums.

Syberg was one of the earliest Zahrtmann acolytes and became much more of a colorist under his tutelage.

Later Syberg reverted to a purely figurative style and did many portraits and self-portraits - but he still retained a strong colorist streak in his oil paintings. Along with that he became a proficient water-colorist and also worked with drawing for book illustration purposes.

Sophus Paulsen (Nov. 23, 1883 - 1935) was a Danish landscape painter, sometimes considered a second generation Funen painter. He was Academy trained and traveled extensive in Europe after graduating. In 1912 he settled on the small island of Ærø where he spent the next 20 years of his life.

His art is post-Impressionist with some expressionist features. Here is an undated and untitled canvas of his - quite typical in its bucolic rendering of a Danish field in summer with thunder showers coming in...
