Perfect Spicy BBQ Rotisserie Chicken🤤
Blast From the Cooking Past
@rottenbrainstuff inspired me with her zany cook book from 70s and I had to dig out this book I bought in New Orleans in 2007. I asked a woman at a kitchen store to recommend a quintessentially Louisiana recipe book. I didn't realize until I got home and unpacked it what I actually bought:
So, yeah, no wonder it's sold over a million copies, it has been around for a million years.
My fave recipes are ones like this:
Want some fifties glamour? Try "City Chicken"! Rolled in crackers, then fried? My, my! It's not actually chicken? How terribly chic and what a clever name, Barbara!
Ooh, an Asian dish, Betty (if that is your name, I'm guessing)? I don't know! Does your hubby really approve of this dabble in foreign food? It uses his fave bourbon? You don't say! Well, then, maybe my Jim will try it. Still, I better make an extra pot roast, just in case. (Note: most recipes in here are from certified Mrs. Husband's full name which gets more grating later as I will demonstrate).
Salt and pepper? Martha, how much pepper? What if I make it too spiiiicy?
Oh god, oh god, it's a poofy rat recipe. Huuu-
ICE CREAM ON BROWNIES? ELLEN, YOU GENIUS.
Okay, but, this book gets even more retro. It contains a whole section on:
And it's full of useful recipes like:
Yes, steak with salt, pepper and sugar (for some inexplicable reason) and boiled corn. Thanks for the tips, tips.
In case you were a little worried about the alarming progressiveness of men cooking for their families, don't fret. There are true "manly" recipes that only men could contribute.
Note, good ol' John Barton doesn't need no stinking title. None of his fellow men do either. They all just get to be Roys and Freds. Not a Mister to be found.
The rest of the men's section contains a lot of, you guessed it, pit and barbeque cooking.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this window into the exciting world of fifties recipes.
