tiny nitpick but doesn't ichigo mean number 1 as opposed to 1, and if that is the case shouldn't it be written as kamen rider #1?

Exactly!  It’s one of the reasons I use the ichigo designation, it sounds better to me and it’s the way it is said in Japanese.  Heck, if we were going to translate everything we’d refer to the show as Masked Rider instead of Kamen Rider all the time.  I can’t do that because… well…
