And then they were finished. Six weeks of hard work and a slightly longer last session saw these five dedicated individuals complete their oak dovetailed boxes. All with little or no experience of using hand tools or working wood achieved some excellent results. It never fails to surprise me to see students taking on some newly taught skills, including accurate marking out, hand planing and chiselling to craft some beautiful items. Another bunch of happy students! I had the pleasure of teaching this group over two consecutive Saturdays. All complete novices when it comes to working with wood. They learned the basics of timber movement, grain direction and how to accurately mark out their components. We used cheery and ash timbers, they cut beautiful dovetails and added a pivot hinged lid. That’s teaching wrapped up for another year. This group of students were super focused and have made some great looking boxes. We’ve used British hardwoods, oak and cherry in this case, there wasn’t quite enough time to apply any finish, but luckily we sell little kits containing Osmo, wire wool and sand paper so that students can oil their boxes at home. It’s been a few months since I last taught. The school has been shut and only now are we able to get back and get our students to finish off their boxes. Things are rather different though, from no sharing of tools, wearing of face visors, and regularly hand sanitising. It’s always a race to the finish to complete the boxes. So week six has the students working in pairs using the pillar drill to accurately drill 5mm holes through their box sides and into the lids. Worth taking time on this stage as it’s essential the holes are in plane with each other so the lids open correctly. Then there’s usually time to apply a coat of finish to get the grain to really pop. Well done guys, super pleased with your work and effort. Another great bunch of students @goodlifecentre . For the first time I had two couples my group....one were making a box each, the other couple a box between them. Some healthy competitive really kept them focussed, they all learnt how to use a wide variety of hand tools, from marking gauges, adjustable squares, chisels planes and dividers. They even got to have a go on the band saw to aid the fitting of their lids and bases.
