Visiting the Norwegian Hektor Whaling Station in Whalers Bay, Antarctica was a step back in time. The whaling station is located on Deception Island, and operated from 1911 to 1931. Hard to imagine sailing all the way from Norway to the end of the earth. Watching the New Zealand fur seal have a snooze. He’s only a teenager so needs his sleep.

The New Zealand fur seal is actually a sea lion having a pointed nose, white whiskers and two layers of dark brown fur. They are quite rare and rather shy compared to their Galapagos cousins.
