Hey gang. I heard the news about Archie Sonic’s cancellation. I’m sad and bitter. Sad that it’s the end of an era, bitter at the way the whole situation was handled.
I know there's a phrase "All good things must come to an end". But not like this: when the longest running video game comic just comes to standstill just like that, and not going out with a bang, ending at issue 300, or releasing Sonic Overdrive, it's really upsetting and disappointing on how this was handled. Not letting the fans know a bit on what was happening, confusion on the situation...
I remember seeing this comic back in 2013 in a shop, when I saw Sonic and Mega Man on the cover I was like, "wait these guys have a comic series?" (Later I learned that it was a Worlds Collide crossover). Then I followed the comic post genesis, issue #256. I was interested with the character interactions and the art, but was confused with all of the flashbacks. These made me go back to the issues of the pre genesis era. Looking back at the older issues with the art and dialogue wasn't a pretty experience (Looked up most of them through Robotnik Holmes' comic reviews,) and made me more relieved that the comic was going for a better direction art and story wise.
The comic post genesis honestly had some decent writing, (some of which are better than the current game stories) interactions from familiar characters and new ones, interesting backstories/lore...
And then there was the art.
When Champions and the Megadrive arcs showed up, The art was one of the few things that inspired me to draw. The poses, the expressions, it was what kept me motivated and inspired me to keep on drawing. There were a couple of favorite artists from this comic. I feel bad for those who worked really hard on it, some hearing the news early and some were probably left in the dark about this. (?)
If Sega is planning to make another Sonic comic under a different publisher and with a different direction, then I might be interested to see how it goes. But for now?
While I'm sad this comic is ending, after all of those issues, hard work and comic memories, I just wanna say-
Thank you Ian Flynn. Thank you Aleah Baker. Thank you Tracy Yardley! Thank you Jennifer Hernandez. Thank you @mattherms. Thank you @spiritsonic. Thank you @nerfuffle. Thank you @tysonhesse. And thanks to everyone else who worked hard on the comic, it was fun while it lasted.
