The Secret Life of Materials
- We are surranded by a tons of materials. Everything within our lives is made of diverse materials. Even those things are changing and deverloping, which means our relationship with materials are enhancing.
- In the video, the most interested future materials are water supplies is inspired by human body, espicially 'Aquaporins' that filter water and only water molecules,
"The whole idea came in the context of biomimicry, which basically means that you use principles from nature to apply them in industrial environment."
and the 'Protocells' that resist the revages of time.
"We are thinking ahead to new kinds of materials that one might be able to in the built environment to make building, and homes that are more resoponsive are more integrated into the environments."
"One of the future visions for making new materials with like proleries is that you would have a structure that is self-repairing, perhaps self-growing even self-reproducing even."
"Besides being incredibly cool to watch, researchers told the New Scientist they hope the discovery can create devices using the metal for health purposes, such as delivering materials within blood vessels.
Or perhaps there’s more sinister use for it: shape-shifting robots.
“The soft machine looks rather intelligent and [can] deform itself according to the space it voyages in, just like [the] Terminator does from the science-fiction film," Jing Liu from Tsinghua University in Beijing told the publication. "These unusual behaviours perfectly resemble the living organisms in nature.”
Metal foam is a cellular structure consisting of a solid metal - frequently aluminum - containing a large volume fraction of gas-filled pores. The defining characteristic of metal foams is a very high porosity: typically 75-95% of the volume consists of void spaces. The strength of foamed metal possesses a power law relationship to its density; i.e. 20% dense material is more than twice as strong as 10% dense material (Ceteris paribus). The metal Foam will be used in the future because it has slight resistance: some metal foams are so light they float to the...
Aerogel is one future material which is being developed today. Aerogel is a low-density solid-state material derived from gel in which the liquid component of the gel has been replaced with gas. The result is an extremely low density solid with several remarkable properties, most notably its effectiveness as a thermal insulator. Aerogel is also known as frozen smoke solid smoke or blue smoke due to its semi-transparent nature and the way light scatters in the material. This future material is made from silica (silicon dioxide) and 96% air. This...
