Taylor, today I had my midterm practical for optometry school and was SO nervous leading up to it. This morning, on my drive to school, I had Welcome To New York on full blast because the intro pumps me up. Thanks for always being there!! @taylorswift PS: My practical went well. My professor said I did good. I'm now waiting for my actual score!
Starting this Saturday I'm going to be in Orlando, FL for my next internship and I couldn't be more excited to (besides perform eye exams) play tourist for the next 3 months. Anybody from around there?
scienceis-everything: Hey! I saw that you’re an optometry student, and well, I’m currently in the process of applying and all that good/stressful stuff. I was wondering what advice you have for interviews and what else i can do to make myself a competitive applicant? My stats: 3.4 GPA, 30 hours shadowing (so far), mission trip, tri beta biology honor society, 7 years working at a doctor’s office.. uh, think that’s it. I have yet to take the OAT, which I’m honestly the most worried about. If you have any tips for that as well, I’m all ears! <3
Hello! I've got to say I'm not sure I can tell you much else to make yourself more appealing because you've already got a whole lot going for you! The amount of shadowing experience is great, and by all means do more if you can just so you can see and be introduced with a few things before you formally learn and get tested on it lol. I wasn't sure if the office you worked at was an M.D or O.D. but either is especially good experience. That's one of the things I wished I had been able to do before I went to school.
The 1st interview will be the hardest because you won't know what to expect. Dress conservatively (Macy's often has a good sale on 2 piece suits :) I interviewed at Indiana, Ferris, and Ohio state if you're interested in knowing about those. Before I had my dad ask me "interview" questions that I would answer as practice, so you could do something similar with someone and that way you can get feedback and discuss it. Google will have good common questions. Be prepared to answer the big "why do you want to be an OD" question. And easier said than done of course is to try and not get too nervous, or at least look that way ;P I remember completely forgetting what was asked while I was answering for one interview and still got in though haha.
As for the OAT, I recommend getting a study book...it's the only thing I studied and they have practice tests that are similar to the real test. Also do what I didn't and start early! I started maybe a month ahead and did decent but probably could have done better on my physics score ;P

Hello, and congratulations getting into optometry school!
Hmm, some of the best advice I can think of is to be prepared to work hard, because you will be learning more than you probably initially expect to…eyes are more complicated than the seem ;P But also realize you don’t have to stress too hard about whether or not you’re at the top of the class. Nobody is going to ask what your GPA was when applying for optometry jobs. Your biggest support system will be your classmates; you all will eat, sleep, and breathe optometry for the next four years. In my experience everyone will be willing to share tips, tricks, compare notes and spread around helpful material from past students that get passed down to them. And of course, don’t wait to ask for help either from classmates, students from the years ahead, or professors because the last thing you want to do is get behind. Everything builds upon the other and if you get confused about one thing you’ll probably get confused on many other things in future semesters.
The one thing I sorta wished I’d known/thought of earlier was how to handle my notes. I started out printing off the powerpoints and taking notes on the paper and then filing all my notes away in drawers (I’ve pretty much kept everything to study for National Boards). My 3rd year though I started taking notes on my computer/tablet in organized folders, which was quicker and neater than handwriting. In terms of storage and portability that was so much easier than having a whole file cabinet of notes. It makes searching for things way quicker. I’m on 4th year rotations now and I had to leave a whole ton of notes at home just because I didn’t have any room in my car to take them and a couple of times its popped up that I would have loved to look something up in my notes that I couldn’t take with me. If writing out your notes is the best way you learn, then do that but I recommend possibly scanning them into PDF so you don’t have to take the paper copies everywhere.

I wouldn't mind Seattle, honestly. And of course Ft. Wayne is my hometown...but I love and have a lot of connections with the East Coast and the Carolinas. I'm so excited for you 3rd years and I'm going to miss quite a few of you!
Luckily there are quite a few of East Coasts sites. I might have done the Utah one if we didn't have only 3 freakin' days to move between sites, which would take me that long driving from SC!
I still can't believe I've finally hit this point...I still remember walking in as a first year. I will certainly miss Bloomington and having our little optometry family around, though I can't say I'll miss having classes lol. Soon enough you'll be at this point as well :)
Packing up my room in order to head back home for a few days before moving down to South Carolina for the first of my optometry externships. So far I've learned that I suck at dusting and I hoard a lot of shit that I don't need
I am officially done with classes FOR THE REST OF MY FREAKIN' LIFE. I have waited 20 years for this moment. Only one more year of externships before I will officially be an optometrist
