"SHE PUSHED ME!" wails of a small child could be heard from across the playground, holding onto his scraped knee. He continues to cry, as he points to blame who have caused his predicament. A small child—no older than him— stands, arms crossed, a pout on her face, "HMPH, I didn't push that hard," she stares at him, as if she did not just push him off the slide intentionally.
"Rumi, say sorry," you look down, shy to look at Rumi's face, while fiddling with your fingers together. Rumi in the other hand looks betrayed, ready to cry herself, after hearing what her bestest friend of the world had just said.
"He being a baby," Rumi reasons with herself.
"You hurt Jinu," you pout as if stating the obvious predicament your all in.
Without both of you looking at Jinu, he stood up, still a little shaken from the push and winces from the stinging pain that comes from his (still) scraped knee. He wonders close to you, standing just behind you, looking just above your shoulder, staring stright back at Rumi —the mean girl— he thinks to himself. He stares at her, a smug look on his face that makes Rumi want to push him off another swing, or even a slide if given the chance.
Jinu takes this chance to interlocks his small hand with yours, feigning innocence. Rumi looks ready to tackle Jinu when she first saw his hand get close to your; and you, sweet you being the kind person you are, hold onto his hand, as if comforting him. Oh, but Rumi is not having that, not on her watch.
She grabs your other free hand with hers. Sandwiching you between both of them. Rumi stands the same height as Jinu, taking this chance to have a serious stare off with him.
Rumi glares at him.
Jinu glares back.
You being the middle man (literally) you opted to buy ice-cream in hopes to release the rising tension between your friend and best friend.
You tug your friends to your care taker, wanting to ask permission if you could buy ice-cream for them and yourself. You were sure she was gonna let you because you’re her favorite. Mentally smiling to yourself.
Just stopping right before your care takers legs, you let go of your friends hands to tug on her dress. She looks down to you, a smile on her face. “Yes, (y/n)?”
You smile at her —a smile as bright as the sun— unknowingly being admired by two others beside you. “Can we get ice-cream, pleaseeeeee,” you clasp your hands, pleading with her. You wanted ice-cream in hopes that would make everything better for everyone.
Your care taker looks at you fondly, giving you her thinking face. You plead with her some more, giving her the puppy eyes as a last resort. She laughs wholeheartedly.
“Of course, (y/n), but we should ask first their parents if they can get some too,” she pats you on the head. You smile bright at her touch, having always felt safe when you are closest to her. “Why dont you go around and ask if they can ice-cream too,” she tries to shoo you away but you stood still. You grab her hand, pulling her to go with you. She plays with you by stubbornly sitting still on the bench.
Rumi and Jinu watch you with attentive eyes, more so Rumi. Oh, how precious you are to her. Only ever meeting in school, she takes any chance she can get to stick close to you and spend as much time she can to stay close to you. She hates it when anybody else gets more time with you other than her and the others. Especially, if those who gets close are those icky, gross, and cootie infested boys—like Jinu—, as she quickly glares at Jinu.
You pout hard when, Nari, would still not budge from the bench, no matter how hard you tugged on her arm. You look to Rumi,”Ruru, please help. I want ice-cream nowww,” you pout at her with pleading eyes. As if you needed to do more than just ask her, and she would do it.
“I can help too!” Jinu exclaim, suddenly feeling left out.
All three of you now try and drag your care taker to get up the bench, but even three children were still not enough strenght to get her up.
“NARIIII!, get uppppp!” Tears pools up your eyes, feeling frustrated at Nari.
Both Rumi and Jinu quickly double their efforts after seeing tears start to gather around your eyes.
Nari laughs at the three of you, and finally stands up. Easing the tears in your eyes, and the frustated brows of both Rumi and Jinu.
“Ok, lets go and ask them now” Nari, smiles at you, holding her hand out for you to hold, “Keep me company, Jagiya (baby).”
“Mhmm!” you hummed happily. You ran happily with, Nari, right by you. Dragging her along with no care in the world. Rumi and Jinu just steps behind both you and Nari.
You first went to stop by Jinu and his papa. You've met him a couple of times before, either when he picks up Jinu from school or when you come to visit Jinu in the park. This would mark your first meeting with Jinu’s papa. Getting up closer now, stars would have appeared in your eyes if it were possible; Jinu’s papa was big and gruffy from first glance, but quickly seems to soften quickly when he spots Jinu quickly approaching him. His shoulders lax, and his posture itself seems to release itself from being tense. He smiles at Jinu when you all stop in front of him. You were hooked. You never seen a big papa like him, he has cool tattoos of fire in your favorite color. It also seems like he has big sharp teeth in the inside of his mouth, you have always been fascinated with fangs.
“Hello there, little one,” he arches down from where he was sitting, trying to get into eye-level with you. “So, what honors do I have, to have met the very, gongju (princess), that has my sons’ smitten,” you turn shy at his blantant compliment. Jinu, blushes and turns his head to the side, avoiding eye contact with his papa. Rumi, just pouts in the side.
“ICE CREAM!” You shout, arms put up to emphasize your demand.
Nari, quickly scolds you though, telling you to do it more kind and gentle, “Thats not how we ask others what we want now is it, (y/n)?” She puts a comforting hand to your back, “why don't you try again. This time a bit more kindly now,”
You quickly try again.
“Can, Jinu, please have ice-cream with us?” your pleading eyes stares right back at him, awaiting his answer. You slowly sway on your feet, suddenly feeling shy under his gaze.
Jinu’s papa seems to be contemplating his answer. He gives you a gentle smile, brows furrowed, as if a silent apology before even saying anything.
“As much as I would allow for Jinu to have ice-cream with you,” he says, as he puts his large hand on top of your head, you tilt your head up, looking at him, “But, it is close to dinner time as it is. We would have to go soon. Im sorry little one,” he stands from the bench, intent to carry Jinu from where he stands. “Im sure we could plan another date for you and Jinu to have ice cream together,” and just like that, off they went back home together. Jinu waves goodbye to you from where he is currently being carried off by his papa. You wave goodbye to him, sad to see him go so soon.
Rumi in the other hand is estactic, and waves figorously goodbye. Its like what her eomma said, “the less competition, the easier the win,” smiling as wide that her face can allow.
Now, it was just you and Rumi—Rumi being happy to finally be alone with you. You dart off with Rumi in hand and Nari in tow, to the next parent to ask, to share the sweet delicacy of ice cream with your best friend.
Arriving close to Rumi’s eomma, you can now distinctively make her out from the rest of the crowd. She was tall, defintiely taller than Nari, and the rest of the care-takers in your home. You were for sure she was either bored or tired from just being here, her face doesn’t make it easy to distinguish from both; she was seated on a bench just under a tree, using it as form of shade from the setting sun. Rumi definitely takes after her eomma in terms of features, just not personality.
You step close to her, matching her stare when she looks down on you, she looks unimpressed by what shes seen. You'll make sure to change that, though.
“You look mean,” you point at her, keeping your stare leveled with hers.
You both stare each other down. Rumi off to the side, nervous of what just transpired. Nari, holding back her laugh at your actions. She definitely was telling this to the other girls in the orphange.
“You should definitely smile more,” you smile, as if giving her a demonstration.
“This is just how I look, kid,”
“Well…you should just change that,”
Rumi eomma’s brow twitched in irritation at that.
You both hold each others gaze, blinking slow with thought.
Shes annoying. Both of you think to each other.
Rumi’s eomma, leans back to the bench, and raises her foot to land on the top of her other legs knee. “You got guts, I'll give you that kid,” she muses, “Go on ahead, I heard that you want to have ice cream with my baby girl…—just don't go eating too much, Rumi, your mother is making dinner at home,” she waves her hand up and down, to dismiss you towards where the ice cream cart is located.
Smiles form on both you and Rumi’s face. Running hand in hand towards the ice cream cart. Nari, following right behind both you of you with gentle steps.
Nari watches both you and Rumi, stop just in front of the vendor of the ice cream cart. She silently walks behind you, patting you softly in the back, you turn your head to look at her, and she then hands you a couple of won just enough to buy two ice creams. You then ask her if she wanted ice cream too, but she just shakes her head, and watches you as you go and buy yourself and Rumi the flavors you’ve been craving.
There was motherly love in Nari’s gaze as she stands off to the side and watches both you and Rumi, though she was only your temporary care taker in the orphanage, like many other of her friends back in work, they’ve become attached and emotional to the kids they have come to taken care of. Sometimes it didn’t come easy when they were adopted by other families—though it was a selfish thought that have come to pass at times.
You sat down beside Rumi on the bench that faced towards the setting sun. There was a sense of serenity that filled the air, you both watch as the others that lingered in the area have started to leave the park. Others, that sat down on the grass, either alone or with their family and friends, all preparing to watch the sun set as night fall aproaches.
For the moment you felt as if you were in a movie, you acting as the main character in those Disney movies you love to watch and Rumi being your best friend assistant, who stays by ther princess forever. You look to face, Rumi, beside you, staring at her side profile as she watches the sun. She smiles happily, eating her ice cream in reasonable pace, definitely trying to avoid it melting onto her hand; oblivious to you watching her, but in instinct she moves her free hand towards yours. Hand stopping just on top of yours.
You move in close, closing the gap between you both. Shoulders against each other, legs tightly knitted with each other, and arms to hook against hers. Eating ice cream together with her was the definite dream come true.

It might have been funny, if she could still laugh; not even a demonic trance was enough to make her brain shut up.

Can be read as a standalone, but is something of a prequel to Shattered Sunshine.
