Happy Wincest Wednesday ^_^
Jensen and Jared have said that Sam and Dean weren't really surprised that they were soulmates, that it was more a confirmation of what they already knew.
So my question is, in Supernatural's world, what does it feel like? Is it like our sense of soulmate, a deep and encompassing connection? Or is there more of a sensation to it?
Sam and Dean are soulmates, can they feel each other? The essence? Is there a sense of settling when they come back around each other? An ache that goes beyond just missing each other when they're separated?
What are your thoughts?
hi, audie! happy wincest wednesday! :)
ooh this is a great question! hmmm...
i think for sam&dean that there is definitely a sensation component.
in s2e1, sam says that he "felt" dean in the hallway, but isn't able to quite describe what that feeling is. they say more than once in the show that they know their brother is alive, and that he's going to come save him (whoever "he" is in the moment). even when they've been mind-erased with angel magic, one of sam's first memories to return is of dean.
i have a post here about samdean soulmatisms during swan song, if you're interested!
they're always hyper-attuned to each other in a room, and you rarely see them turn around to look for each other--they seem to always know where the other is standing, and exactly how far away.
however, i don't think that this is something that they'd ever be able to articulate. it's not a conscious thing that they do, or acknowledge, but they immediately feel more settled and calm when they're together.
when they're apart, they immediately start becoming uncomfortable. this is really emphasized i think in "scarecrow," where they start calling each other every three hours essentially, even after they've made up; and in that one episode (i forget) where dean immediately pulls sam's contact up after going out to a bar alone. it feels antsy. restless. a pull underneath their skin.
and i think dean probably felt this even when soulless!sam was back, which was one of the reasons he was immediately tipped off that something wasn't right--he still felt uneasy and nervous in his bones like sam was still gone.
sam is run so ragged when dean's soul is corrupted into demonhood, bc i think he was experiencing--in some regard--an existential threat! this-me-that-is-not-me-is-gone. there is absolutely his normal reaction, of being freaked out and upset and devastated bc dean is dead, but once he knows dean is a demon, it's like he's wired. shaky, like after a withdrawal.
i think there also might be another reading where a lot of their really reckless/dangerous/cruel decisions are made while the other's soul is in existential threat (e.g., detoxing sam in the panic room, inviting gadreel in, drinking demon blood & killing hosts, releasing the darkness, etc.), because they ARE soulmates, and it's like a dog chewing its own leg (in this case morals) off to save itself (in this case, the other half of their soul).
but in terms of fluff, because that's what i live for, yes, yes, yes. these men are best friends!!! they're brothers. they're...lovers? 👀 no one in the entire world can make them laugh like each other, or know exactly what they need like each other.
i think being soulmates to them is something that they don't even notice, or if they do, think 'this is how siblings are.'
when dad--drunk off his ass and unusually talkative--talks about how he loved their mom so much that he could kill anyone to bring her back, dean nods because, yeah. that's what sammy feels like. when kids in sam's class talk about how they wish they were an only child, he laughs along at first but then is like 'oh. damn. :| but what abt the way u feel fizzy all the way up when they laugh??'
this is just what their favourite person feels like: warmth in your toes, weight to your limbs, an open breeze, your favourite song, listening to someone hum while they cook, patchwork sun on your closed eyelids as you doze in the back of a car, chest so light you need to laugh just to feel it again.
when they're alone, on a regular day, it's quiet. it's sam not worrying about if he left the light on, it's dean being able to focus because sam is breathing in his space. when they're in a group of people, it's louder, pulls them together gently like a warm tide. when they're scared or stressed, it's strong, a magnet that hurts to resist.
when they're angry at each other, it's a vortex, and they resent the fact that even if their minds and bodies want to get as far away as possible, their souls are still pressed up against their chests, trying to stay close.
like,,,when the cage cracks open in s4e22 (or e21, i forget), even though sam thinks dean wants him dead and has rejected his brotherhood, and dean is so mad at him that he literally tried to beat his ass in a hotel room; they reach for each other. they say each other's name, over and over, even though the other definitely can't hear it.
it's INSTINCT!! like yes this is the end of the world level, and yes, we hate each other, but if i am going to die, i am going to die with my brother's skin under my hand and his name in my mouth. FUCKED UP!!! AHHHHHHHHH!!!!
anyway. yes, there is definitely a sensation component, haha! but also just a sense of "dean is here, i am exhaling, i can think clearly, things are okay," and "sammy's here, and he's smiling, and my bones are no longer vibrating."
this was really fun to think about, and made my chest all warm and fuzzy, lol! thank you so much for this ask! i hope the rest of your Wednesday and your week is fantastic! :) <3

If we have to slim them down to two characteristics, which deadly sin (lust, greed/gluttony, envy, anger/wrath, pride, or sloth) and heavenly virtue (prudence, justice, temperance, courage, faith, hope, or charity) would you assign to Sam and Dean?
(I am going to ask a gee other people this question, but your post was what got me thinking about it)
sam: pride & hope
dean: envy & charity
* it was hard choosing 1 virtue for sam, i see a bit of everything in him, especially temperance (he was able to keep himself from relapsing for years) and prudence. faith was a strong contestant, but seeing as the literal act of believing in god only bit him in the ass, i went with hope. it represents his message and how he affects other characters, especially dean. for the deadly sin, it was a close tie between pride and anger but i went with pride because it was what misdirected his feelings of anger and caused his initial downfall.
* for dean, i avoided the more shallow options like lust and went with envy because it originates from a fear of abandonment and an unstable sense of self / insecurity. for the virtue, i would've gone with courage but i eventually picked charity for its meaning of selfless, unconditional love, beyond the act of literal giving. i think i cooked here, keeping in mind my headcanon of bpd!dean and his overall canon characterization.
what about you?
Just wanted to pop in and say that this is a fantastic, lovely idea and it's really sweet of you to do ⚘
thank you!
The results so far have been really surprising.
Watching the shipping landscape change in real time is crazy, couples that did well a year or two ago (and that I thought would be a shoo in) dropped off so early!
Oh, I totally agree! There are some ships that were so big before, it's such a good surprise to watch how all this end up!
Ooh so you're watching 98 Trigun. What do you think?
I’m really liking it so far! Though I should probably hold off on extensive comparisons with TriStamp until I’ve finished 98, I think these anime adaptations are a prime example of the “two cakes” philosophy: Distinctive versions that each bring something good and unique to the table. It might a bit hypocritical of me to call 98 Trigun’s style “nostalgic” since I didn’t enter weebdom until around 2017, but the animation has this feel of belonging to a bygone era that gels nicely with the western elements. The cast for the English dub give an entertaining performance, especially the voice actors for Vash and Milly.
And, speaking of Milly…Milly Thompson, woman that you are! 😍 A himbo lesbian with keen powers of perception, big guns (of both the metallic and muscular variety), and a heart of gold. If she snapped me in half, I’d thank her, but she’s likely the type to give out warm bear hugs instead. 🥰 I definitely understand why fans of the original were so irate over her absence in Trigun Stampede (barring the offscreen mention in the last episode), because she’s a treasure! 💕 Milly also makes a great foil to her girlfriend Meryl. While I’m fond of TriStamp Meryl, I love how the 98 version gives us assertive, spitfire (complimentary) Derringer Meryl right off the bat. She’s serving fashion and putting outlaws in their place with her coat of many guns, and her complete lack of patience with Vash’s tomfoolery (to the point where she stubbornly denies the possibility of this chucklehead being the Humanoid Typhoon for several episodes) cracks me up every time. 😂 I also like the running gag of Milly and her being insurance agents. Although TriStamp’s decision to make Meryl a journalist worked fine—giving her a plausible motive for chronicling Vash’s misadventures—her original position as an insurance worker places a greater emphasis on the violence and destruction which plague the story (as she and Milly scramble to document the havoc wreaked in Vash’s wake), albeit with a comical twist.
Vash remains my darling babygirl, whether caught up in madcap hijinks or betraying the deep sadness hidden behind that smile. Johnny Bosch does a wonderful job bringing him to life (I mostly watched the sub when TriStamp was airing, so getting to hear his interpretation of the character is a treat!). However, I’m not a huge fan of the stereotypical “sleazy womanizer” bit inexplicably tacked on to Trigun 98—my plant boi drinks his respecting ladies juice, thank you very much! 😤 But perhaps it’s just part of his silly goofy guy act, albeit a distasteful one, so I’m hoping it’ll be phased out as the show progresses.
(Haven’t reached Wolfwood’s intro yet, but I’m looking forward!)
The 98 anime’s more relaxed pace is another point in its favor. As much as I enjoyed TriStamp, that 12-episode limit plaguing so many contemporary anime often left the plot with little room to breathe, which I think might be one reason why the melancholy undertones came through with such unremitting force from the very beginning. In contrast, 98 Trigun can afford to be stealthier, keeping things light in the early episodes, but with occasional somber moments betraying the brutal angst to come. Both approaches have merit, though! Like I mentioned earlier, the two Triguns are a pair of cakes: Different frosting and flavors, but both delicious.
The OP is, as the younglings say, a banger. I’m normally not a huge fan of instrumental OPs, but I inevitably find myself rocking out to this one! 🎶 Meanwhile, the languorous ED evokes lazy Sunday afternoons dozing in the shade; it makes me want to take a nap in a hammock like Vash is in one of the stills.
TL; DR: The ride’s a blast, and I am fully prepared to get hurt again. 😎
Matsuda and/or Beyond Birthday for the character asks? Thank you!
of course!
MATSUDA:
1: sexuality headcanon: comfortably straight most of the time, but maayyybe a bit bi and just not totally aware of it too (I could see him kinda crushing on the Yagami men, for example) 2: otp: I don't often really think about ships with Matsuda, but I do think it's fun sometimes to imagine awkward shippy scenarios between him and Light 3: brotp: I love how much he loves Misa, hahaha. But him and Soichiro is a definite brotp as well 4: notp: sorry but I just really don't like him with L, it gives me the no feeling so badly every time ahahaha 5: first headcanon that pops into my head: he has a couple of older sisters and a mom who spoiled and babied him quite a lot 6: favorite line from this character: When he attacks Light in the warehouse and is calling him out on his bullshit and bringing up Soichiro, that's a pretty great Matsuda moment overall 7: one way in which I relate to this character: I too get easily stressed out when people are angry at me 8: thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character: Him begging for L's approval and praise... like omg no Matsuda that's the worst possible thing you could do to L, he's not stupid nor oblivious to the things going on around him, and he definitely doesn't want you to tell him what to do 9: cinnamon roll or problematic fave?: He's not quite as much a cinnamon roll as some of the fandom seems to think, but he's not a crazily problematic fave by any means either
BEYOND BIRTHDAY:
1: sexuality headcanon: idk a straight B just seems so wrong... the boy is gay 2: otp: I LOVED mostly one-sided LxB back in the day, and it's definitely still my fave ship for B, but I also really like the idea of him with A in a softer sort of way 3: brotp: A, or Naomi... their stupid-ass dynamic is by far the highlight of the novel 4: notp: Don't really like him paired off with Naomi in any sexual or romantic way, I just feel super bad for her ahahah 5: first headcanon that pops into my head: He has a VERY weird relationship with photographs due to being able to see people's lifespans in them, and can be a cryptic tyrant to other people about them showing pictures of people to him without warning, like his favourite celebrities like voice actors and authors and such (sort of as though they're spoiling his favourite TV show for him) 6: favorite line from this character: He has a lot of cringy classics, but I definitely gotta pick the one about him not even submitting to traffic signals, wtf 7: one way in which I relate to this character: I too lacked artistic subtlety and didn't know the genre of the show I was starring in once I went to art school and had to start making fine art 8: thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character: EVERYTHING. Just absolutely everything, which is also why he's kinda the best 9: cinnamon roll or problematic fave?: Definition of a problematic fave
