Review: If You Like Outrun, You'll Love The Foreign's Around Every Corner
https://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/album=1138516390/size=large/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=333333/artwork=small/transparent=true/
If you haven't listened to Future 80s Records artist The Foreign, now would be a great time to start. His new release Around Every Corner takes synthwave influences and infuses them with more modern synthpop/pop-rock tropes to create a fun-filled work of retronostalgic beauty. You really should check it out immediately, but if you need a little convincing, I'm going to go through the album track by track so you know which ones not to miss.
Up and On (feat. Kyle Brauch of MIDWAVE)
This track is a great way to start the release: it brings a whole lot of energy right from the onset. For some reason (I'm not sure if it's the vocals or the instrumentation), this track reminded me of if Fall Out Boy decided to make synthwave. The vocals are definitely the most standout aspect for me of Up and On, but the percussion really keeps the track moving. The variation in the percussion patterns keeps the listener interested from beginning to end.
Star Runners (feat. Erika of Artek Electronica)
This one has that hard-hitting outrun feel that we've come to expect from the darker side of synthwave. The chord progression screams spooky and that creepy atmospheric vibe comes to a climax when the music cuts out a bit and all that's left is some choir pads and a pretty interesting vocal (not entirely sure what it says...it's in Russian I believe). One word for me to describe this track would be: soundtrack to your halloween.
In the Cold of the Night (feat. Confrontational)
My favorite thing about Around Every Corner is how well all of the songs blend together. There's some serious musical continuity between all the tracks on the record. The vocals in this track are expertly placed in the mix...not too loud...not too soft...they're really just right. Each and every synth can be heard as its own distinct element and the vocals serve to accentuate that. The percussion isn't that exciting on this track, but it does fit in with the overall vibe of the track.
The Getaway (feat. Viktor Rom)
Remember a couple songs ago when I said Star Runners had an outrun feel? This one takes that and turns the outrun dial up to 11 (Spinal Tap reference anyone?). The track is pretty stereotypical outrun...it even starts with an engine roaring. That being said, I loved every second of it. The guitar is definitely the most standout part for me. It's reminiscent of some 80s rock or metal to me.
The Streets of 1987 - Part 1 and 2(feat. Maxthor)
The final two tracks on this album pretty much come out of nowhere. Whereas the preceding tracks are pretty hard-hitting and some even verge on being considered darkwave, these last two tracks take a completely different approach. There's some acoustic guitar and some atmospheric pads accompanied by some relaxing vocals in Part 1, and Part 2 is also pretty atmospheric. Part 2 is basically a continuation of Part 1 but without the acoustic guitar. The acoustic guitar is replaced by synths and the vocals more or less stay the same. I personally preferred Part 2 to Part 1, but both are pretty awesome. Honestly, The Streets of 1987 Part 2 was my favorite track on the release.
Conclusions
If the music wasn't enough to convince you to get The Foreign's new release, I mean just look at the album art. How can you turn down a cover that looks like a crazy zombie-killing video game? I give Around Every Corner a big two thumbs up.
